  • SK Gaming acquires NaDa and MC in oGs deal

    July 15th, 2011

SK Gaming has recently struck a deal with oGs to have NaDa and MC represent them in foreign events. SK Gaming recently dismissed its current SC2 roster, and it seemingly was to make room for these new players. SK will surely hope to leave a bigger impact on the tournament scene now with two extremely succesful and consistent players on its roster.

Today the players MC and NaDa are joining the partnership with SK Gaming and we are really happy for them and thankful to SK for this big opportunity. I will do all the best I can to ensure that both players are bringing good results for the partnership of SK Gaming and oGs.

Alexander “TheSlaSH” Mueller, Managing director of SK Gaming, explained:

Adding those two names to the SK roster and entering this partnership with oGs is one of the most exciting steps SK has taken in the past few years. Ever since we signed Korean players for our RTS section, it has been a blast. We are more than happy to present those two to our community and we are hungry for StarCraft II titles!

Min-Sik “reis” Ko, player manager of SK Gaming, added:

I am very happy to welcome those two big names in SC:BW and SC2 history to SK Gaming. I know both privately and I know that both are really nice guys and very ambitious. It’s an honor for me to work with both from now on and thanks to oGs for the cooperation.

    RAK Returns – Project Manana

    July 14th, 2011

    Dear compLexity Community:

It is with great pleasure that I announce, on behalf of the entire compLexity Gaming family, the return of Random Acts of Kindness or “RAK.”  RAK is compLexity’s effort to to encourage the coL Community to support the less fortunate and aid those in need.  Started in late 2007 the initiative has seen compLexity players volunteering (Ronald McDonald House in 2008) and our community raising money for different charities.  RAK was the embodiment of our tradition of charity work that already included funding drives for Tsunami relief, Katrina and Haiti.

For the remainder of 2011, RAK will be focused on a project close to my heart: Project Mañana.  Project Mañana is a small charity that provides food and education for impoverished children in the Domincan Republic.  Started a year ago by Brian Berman, a good friend of mine, the charity already feeds and educates nearly 70 children every day.  It is a small operation with 100% of your donations going directly to the children.  Mr. Berman takes no salary for his efforts.  Unlike previous drives we have conducted, where our efforts definitely helped but were a drop in the bucket, our support for this small charity will make a huge (and direct) difference in the lives of underprivileged children.

Today is the first effort we will make towards fund raising.  There will be several more to come, including a live streaming weekend where I am hoping many pro gamers will join us so we can donate all the streaming revenue to Project Mañana.  If you are interested in helping us raise funds in any way, please contact me here on the website.  On behalf of everyone in compLexity and our loyal sponsors we sincerely thank you in advance for all of your support for 2011 RAK efforts on behalf of Project Mañana.

    God bless,
    Jason Lake

compLexity Gaming and our sponsors offer this contest as a fun way to get people involved but hope that everyone remembers the true spirit of RAK is not to win prizes but to make a difference for someone in need.  Please consider supporting Project Mañana whether or not you enter the contest.  Follow them on Facebook and let them know that the coL Community cares and is supporting their efforts.  Also, please help us spread the word via Twitter, etc, to get as many people involved as possible.  The eSports community can make a gigantic difference for this valuable charity.  Let’s show them what gamers can do when we band together for something good.  Every dollar counts so please consider a small donation today.

Thanks very much for your support of RAK 2011!

IPL2 Kicks Off; Drewbie vs Idra; Minigun vs DieStar

    July 14th, 2011

    Post Game:

The first game of IPL Season 2 featured Season 1 winner EG.IdrA vs. coL.Drewbie. The map was Metalopolis and both players opened with fast expansions. Taking a huge risk, Drewbie expanded again giving him the economic edge on IdrA. This economic boost would prove critical, allowing Drewbie to mass up a huge force and Tank crawl his way to IdrA’s base. When the big engagement happened, IdrA misclicked throwing away his huge Muta ball on Marines and Thors, causing him to leave the game.

Game 2 was on Shakuras Plateau. Drewbie tried a Reaper expand build, but got caught off guard when IdrA snuck a drone into his base. Knowing pretty much everything that was going on, IdrA made a huge ling push that did some serious damage to Drewbie. Already so far behind, Drewbie really didn’t stand a chance once the Muta harass started up. Eventually IdrA just made a ton of Banelings and rolled into Drewbie’s main.

Game 3 was on Xel’Naga Caverns. Again Drewbie tried a one Rax expand into Reactor Hellions while IdrA fast expanded. IdrA was the first player to get aggressive going for a Roach Baneling timing attack. Unfortunately for him, Drewbie already had Siege Mode and Tanks of the field, so he smacked it down easily. feeling confident after that battle Drewbie moved out on the map. While clearing the rocks for a gold expansion, Drewbie got caught off guard and unsieged, losing all his army to Zerglings and Roaches. From here Idra was able to take the map and contain Drewbie. In a last ditch effort to get something done, Drewbie pushed out on the map. While he did manage to take down to bases, IdrA’s army was just too much.

After Drewbie vs. Idra, it was coL.Minigun’s turn to take the battlefield against his opponent Diestar. The first map was Shakuras Plateu and both players fast expanded. Diestar went with the standard Marine Marauder Medivac plus Ghosts composition. Minigun went with High Templar and Gateway units. Showing his fans that there’s a place for Warp Prism play in PvT, Minigun did some major damage to Diestar with Zealot drops. At one point, Minigun sent one Prism into Diestar’s main as a distraction while dropping 2 Templar at the natural. There he got some massive storms on the mineral line devastating Diestar’s economy. With almost no way to get back into the game, Diestar moved out. Minigun made short work of his opponent thanks to some clutch Feedbacks and Force Fields.

Game 2 was on Terminus RE. Diestar executed a the “Tasteless build” (Marine, Siege Tank, Raven, Banshee) flawlessly. He easily contained Minigun denying him an expansion while taking one of his own. Despite Minigun’s best efforts to fight back with Colossus, he just couldn’t break out of his base and was forced to GG.

Game 3 was on Crevasse and looked pretty similar to game one except Minigun used Colossus rather than Templar. He continued to show off his Warp Prism harassment, effectively containing the Terran player. This allowed Minigun to easily take the map and mass up a huge army of colossus and Gateway units. Minigun basically just ran up Diestar’s ramp and killed him thanks to some gorgeous Force Fields.

NASL Season 2 Adds Heroes of Newerth

    July 12th, 2011

This past weekend eSports fans were treated to the North American Star League finals which were held in Ontario, California. During the event, players and casters would take time out of their day to meet with fans and sign autographs. This is standard for these kinds of events, however one thing was out of place. The players and casters were signing autographs at a booth sponsored by S2 Games promoting their title Heroes of Newerth. Many spectators were scratching their heads wondering why S2 Games was promoting their title at a StarCraft II tournament.

Today it was all made clear when S2 Games announced that it has partnered up with the North American Star League to feature the game Heroes of Newerth during NASL Season 2.

Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of details, besides that the game will be featured. Will HoN be a new staple of NASL broadcasts? Will there be similar prize pool for HoN players? Does the NASL plan on bringing in other eSports?

Regardless of the answers to these questions, one thing is for sure; S2 Games wants in on eSports. To get an idea of how serious S2 Games is on the eSports front, check out this interview with Shashi Singh, S2 Games’ eSports manager.

GSL October Finals to be Held at Blizzcon

    July 12th, 2011

This morning GOMtv announced that, in an effort to help grow eSports in the foreign community, it will be holding the GSL October Finals in Anaheim at Blizzcon.

In a post made by GOMtv’s Mr.Chae, the manager of the GSL stated: “Lots of people have made requests about it through Twitter and when I went to MLG Columbus, I came to believe that holding GSL final outside of Korea would be an excellent idea.” He went on to say, “I hope GSL becomes a festival for all the e-sports fans around the globe. I don’t want StarCraft 2 to become an e-sports title like SC BW which was excluded to people inside of Korea.”

This is obviously a huge event for western eSports, but it will be a monumental task for GOMtv. As Mr. Chae says in his post, “The decision was not easy to make. This will be our first time and therefore a great challenge for us to send our staff to produce and transmit from overseas. But it is worthy of a challenge for GSL and something that must be done at some point.” Good thing GOMtv is partnered with Blizzard, who will be “providing us assistance with GSL’s first oversea final.”

This is obviously a huge deal for Western eSports. Anybody who followed Brood War would tell you that the idea of a Korean League holding its finals in the U.S. would be preposturous. I guess this shows that with StarCraft II we’ve entered a new era of progaming, an era that focuses on eSports as a global movement.
