Supreme Court Rejects Violent Videogames Law

June 27th, 2011

Today the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against a proposed California law that was aiming to ban the sale of violent videogames to minors. The law, which was ruled unconstitutional, would have banned the sale or rental of violent videogames to anyone under the age of 18 in California. Anyone who violated the proposed law would have been fined upwards of $1,000.

The Supreme Court voted 7-2 in favor of rejecting the proposed law. Only Justices Breyer and Thomas thought the law was constitutional.

Justice Antonin Scalia, who filed the court’s opinion, said “Video games qualify for First Amendment protection. Like protected books, plays, and movies, they communicate ideas through familiar literary devices and features distinctive to the medium.”

Justice Scalia added “Reading Dante is unquestionably more cultured and intellectually edifying than playing Mortal Kombat. But these cultural and intellectual differences are not constitutional ones.”

Justice Thomas defended his position by stating “The majority strikes down, as facially unconstitutional, a state law that prohibits the direct sale or rental of certain video games to minors because the law ‘abridges the freedom of speech.’ But I do not think the First Amendment stretches that far. The practices and beliefs of the founding generation establish that ‘the freedom of speech,’ as originally understood, does not include a right to speak to minors (or a right of minors to access speech) without going through the minors’ parents or guardians.”

Obviously the videogame industry is pleased with this ruling. Vice President and General Counsel of the Entertainment Consumers Association Jennifer Mercurio commented, “We are thrilled by today’s news. We had hoped that we would see this decision, and it’s been a long time coming.”

coLCatZ and coLDrewbie win PTSL!

June 26th, 2011

Place a win in the books for CompLexity.SC2 as coLCatz and coLDrewbie pick up a win in the 2v2 team league PTSL! After a long tournament they finally won in the grand finals 4-1 against dSeleCt and FXOptiKZeRo. Despite the numbers showing dominance on their part, there were some scary moments, as in the last game they lost their backdoor and nearly got completely overrun before making turning the game around. I might also add that CatZ was playing protoss.

We spoke to CatZ after their big win and got some of his thoughts on the tournament:

We felt confident throughout the entire tournament. Although, contrary to popular belief, we actualyl haven’t played 2v2 almost at all since beta. We only play for official tournaments and clan wars. We’ve only played like 5 games on ladder, and that was just off-racing for fun. However, we did feel confident as we had only lost one entire series since the beta in clan wars, and that was just a proxy build getting the best of us in a BO1.

We had already beaten dSeleCt and FXOptiKZeRo earlier in the tournament, and they were as we saw it our toughest opponents. We didn’t know what to expect from Protech and Power, as we had never played them before. But they had more 2v2’s played together than every team in the tournament combined pretty much, so we were a bit worried about that. Axslav/Strifecro were also old 2v2ers from WC3 who did really well in beta, but ever since them we were confident against them as well, we beat them in the last couple of clan wars that we had. We also got a 3-0 win against them in the WB finals, so we weren’t too worried about that.

We understand 2v2 very well, and we work very well with each other since we were allies in Brood War for a long, long time. 2v2 is a completely different game to 1v1, it requires a different game understanding; but of course, 1v1 mechanics help a lot too. As we started to play SC2 seriously we focused on 1v1, so our mechanics improved greatly but our game knowledge and team work stayed about the same, which makes us sort of scary in 2v2. We are very proud of our accomplishment and we are glad to bring CompLexity another league win 😉

Congratulations to CatZ and Drewbie on their big win! If you’d like to know more about the tournament  all information can be found here.

CompLexity Academy Qualification Group B

June 25th, 2011

CompLexity Academy Quali. Group B

by Nathan Zamora

With compLexity Academy’s first Qualification Tournament coming up this Saturday, June 25th, SC2 players have some high pressure matches to look forward to!  20 players have been randomly placed into four pools – within those pools, each player will play the others, and the player with the worst record will be eliminated.  In this segment, we’ll be looking at Pool B:

Catechin
Cheec[h]
Jedigamer
Jhammy
Jiyan

The first thing to note is the balance of races.  This means that a well rounded player could have the advantage!  Remember, for a player to advance, they need to only -not- have the worst record within the pool.  In other words, a player versed against a plethora of styles stands to stay in the tournament.  Given that, I believe Cheec[h] could bring home the glory in this round – an all around style that yields results good enough to have him ranked #1 in Masters (Division Hellion Iota).

Personally, I’m looking forward to the TvT matchup (Cheec[h] vs Jedigamer).  The ever evolving meta of TvT allows players to be more aggressive in the early harassing or to sit back and hope to build the mid/late advantage.

Though it remains to be seen!  Who will advance; who will go home?  Will Catechin, the Lone Zerg, do his race proud?  Will Jhammy, Jiyan, and the Warp Gate crew Psionic Storm through Terran forces?  Can Cheec[h] and Jedigamer contain opposing forces and march an army of gladiators to heights unseen?  There’s only one way to know – this Saturday at 5PM! (est)
Who do you think will win?

Post in the comments to root for your player in this pool!
