MLG Co-founder interviewed by Forbes

May 27th, 2011

Today an interview with Major League Gaming’s Co-founder Sundance DiGiovanni found its way onto an unlikely website, the national business magazine Forbes. Discussing everything from the validity of eSports to the recent GOMtv GSL partnership, the Forbes article gives gamers a unique look at the competitive gaming scene from on outsiders point of view.

The response for the last MLG event in Dallas was so overwhelming, it caused a lot of technical headaches for both you guys and the viewers. Can you talk a bit about what exactly went down then, and what lessons you guys have taken into MLG Columbus?

The tune-in numbers for the Dallas event were amazing. Unfortunately, we weren’t prepared for that level of traffic. A couple things happened: First, our websites were overwhelmed with the demand for our live streams. Our development team was able to spin up capacity very quickly to meet the demand but the initial load dramatically exceeded our expectation. Secondly, the local network suffered a series of failures which circumvented our backup precautions. We’ve now adjusted our network planning to account for the scenario in Dallas and several other issues. More importantly, we’ve dramatically upgraded our stream delivery infrastructure in partnership with Streamworks who recently handled the streaming for the Royal wedding.  Using a unique technology solution, Streamworks delivers seamless cross platform video with dramatically increased picture and audio quality so our community can count on a great viewing experience. Additionally, the HQ stream will be available in up to 720p and there is no download required; you can watch both the standard and HQ streams directly from the video player on majorleaguegaming.com.

How did this newfound partnership with Korea come about? How much overlap do you think there will be between the American and Korean Starcraft scenes, and how is MLG helping that union?

We’ve been fans of GOMTV and the Global eSports League (GSL) in Korea for a long time now. Blizzard, who has been a great partner to work with, made some formal introductions for us earlier this year and our conversations clearly indicated an alignment of strategic global initiatives. The two scenes have some cross-over today, but nowhere near the level required for the sport to truly advance at an international scale. Our partnership with GOMTV is going to accelerate that growth in some really powerful ways, in addition to giving professional players in both regions the opportunity to compete globally on a regular basis. This can only lead to a more integrated global scene for competitive gaming.

Stalife Interviewed by IPL

May 27th, 2011

Sung Min “Stalife” Park was recentely interviewed by the IGN Pro League after it was announced that Stalife has qualified for the second season of the league. The interview breaks down his achievements as well as what he’s doing to prepare for MLG Columbus which is only a week away.

An excerpt from the interview can be found below:

Cody: Stalife, you were invited to the first season of the IGN Pro League and you had a decent showing.  You ended up losing to KiwiKaki in the first round; obviously, you would preferred a win there, but losing to KiWiKaKi isn’t something to be embarrassed about.  You then went on to beat Sheth in the loser’s bracket, then Spades, and you finally were stopped by ViBE.  What do you think about your performances overall in the event?

Stalife: I actually prepared a lot for KiWiKaKi, as I wanted to perform really well in the first season of the IGN Pro League.  As I was preparing I feel like I improved my Terran versus Protoss matchup quite a bit. Unfortunately, I was pretty sick with the flu after MLG Dallas so I had to play my IPL games sick.

Obviously I am not satisfied with my results as I wanted to get top four. Nevertheless, I’m happy now that I’ve qualified for the second season of the IGN Pro League.

Cody: We’re about a week and a half away from MLG Columbus.  A lot of the folks you’ll be playing at that event will be in our main event this season.  How prepared are you, overall, for some of these bigger events coming up?  Are there any match ups in particular that you need to work on, or do you feel comfortable with everything at the moment

Stalife: My girlfriend told me that it would be impossible for me to be disappointed at Columbus as it’ll be tough to beat my failure at Dallas.  To word it in a good way, I don’t think my performance reflected my skill at Dallas. I feel my overall game, in all matchups, have been refined since Dallas. I am especially comfortable playing TvP now.  I think I will do quite well, but I don’t have any TvT practice partners and my TvT success will likely be the biggest factor as to whether or not I get in the Championship Bracket.

CrunCher vs MoMaN – NASL

May 26th, 2011

Post Game

Game 1: Metalopolis
In typical MoMaN style, he opened the game with a Speedling into fast expand build. CrunCher went with a fast StarGate, going into a Void Ray expand. Realizing that no major attack would be coming from CrunCher, MoMaN sat back on two bases powering up a massive army of Roaches and Hydras. Cutting Drone production, MoMaN was looking pretty all-in as he moved across the map. Because of his StarGate investment, CrunCher was slow to get out Colossus and just didn’t have the money to crank out the Gateway units he needed. Somehow CrunCher held the push, but suffered some major economic damage. MoMan knew he was way ahead so he quickly took a third base at the gold expansion. After powering up another Roach/Hydra army, now supplemented with Corrupters, MoMaN moved out again and crushed CrunCher.

Game 2: Crevasse
MoMaN stuck with his Speedling into expand build, except this time he took two expansions. CrunCher, on the other hand, did a fast expand into GateWay units. MoMaN made a fatal mistake in being way too passive throughout the entire game. This allowed CrunCher to easily take a third and fourth base uncontested. While expanding all over the map, CrunCher got out that classic Protoss Death Ball of Colossus, Stalkers, Sentries and a few Templar sprinkled in just for good measure. MoMaN was maxed out on Roaches, Hydras, Corrupters and eventually Brood Lords. The two armies clashed in the middle of the map. CrunCher absolutely decimated MoMaN’s army thanks to some beautiful Force Fields, Psy Storms and Blink micro. With the Death Ball essentially untouched, MoMaN had no choice but to tap out.

Game 3: Typhon Peaks
MoMaN realized that his passive play allowed CrunCher to win the last game, so he went with the popular Speedling/Roach all-in. CrunCher opened up with the very safe three Gate into expand with a heavy focus on Sentries. When MoMaN’s initial push hit CrunCher easily held it off thanks to some amazing Force Field play. At this point MoMaN was faced with a tough decision; either continue going all-in or try to take a third base and play from behind. MoMaN went with a second push. Again CrunCher held it off like it was no problem. CrunCher now knew that we was miles ahead so he double expanding, one at the normal third base location and the other in an unused main base. MoMaN’s hands were tied at this point and he had to take a shot at another all-or-nothing push. Being two bases up on his opponent, CrunCher easily put the crunch on MoMaN netting him his third win in the NASL.
