The tournament will follow a standard 64-player single elimination format with players from both Code S and Code A. The tournament will start off with a best-of-3 series until the round of 8, where it switches to best-of-5. The finals will be best-of-7. CrunCher vs July – NASL

May 5th, 2011

Post Game:

Game 1: Xel’naga Caverns
July opened with the standard Speedling into fast expand, ensuring that he could hold off some early pressure. CrunCher on the other hand decided to go for a fast Stargate, pumping out a few Void Rays. Using these Voids, CrunCher began to take the map harassing any scouting Overlords and eventually worked his way into July’s natural. There, he did some substantial damage, taking out several Drones pretty early in the game. While this harrassment was going on, CrunCher took his natural expansion and started on Robo tech. Once he knew Voids were on the map, July got his Layer up and began making Hydralisks. Once he beat back the Void harassment, July went into berserk mode, cranking out Zerglings and Hydras for some pressure of his own. Because CrunCher focused on getting those Void Rays out so early, he was lacking in a substantial ground army. This was a critical mistake allowing July to do some major damage. CrunCher eventually held it off, but essentially lost his entire army. July, seeing that CrunCher was going for Robo tech now, switched up his own tech path and began making Mutas and Corrupters. July went in for a second push and was just too powerful for CrunCher,  forcing him to gg.

Game 2: Shattered Temple
July again opened up with the Speedling fast expand build, while CrunCher went with a Forge fast expand. Unfortunately for CrunCher he was playing on the MLG version Shattered Temple, which has a neutral lowered Supply Depot at the ramp. This Depot blocked where the first Pylon of the wall off needs to go, meaning that CrunCher had to improvise his building placement. Because of this, his first Cannon was position too far to the right, allowing Zerglings to run by to harass the expansion. From here on July kept cranking out Zerglings allowing him to easily run over what scant defenses CrunCher was able to field.

Obviously, this wasn’t CrunCher’s best showing. July is now 3-1 in the NASL, where as CrunCher has fallen to 1-3. Don’t count CrunCher out just yet. He still has three more games in the NASL and is more determined than ever to win them.

NASL – Week 4

Tonight, compLexity’s CrunCher will be going toe to toe with the Brood War Legend and GSL Code S player StarTale July. Known for his extremely aggressive Zerg style, July is looking to go up to 3-1 in the NASL. Don’t count CunCher out yet, though. His safe, defensive style might be enough to stop July in his tracks.

The match is set to begin at 9PM EST.

The V – Week #15

May 3rd, 2011

Post Game

Game 1: Crossfire SE
Spanishiwa, staying true to his unique style, opened with a Hatchery first build into quick Speedlings. Terran on the other hand went with a two Rax Bunker rush build. Despite his lack of Zerglings, Spanishiwa had no problem picking off the SCVs building the Bunkers, ultimately holding off the push. While pushing, Terran expanded to his natural and continued cranking out marines. Unfortunately for Terran, he didn’t wall off his main ramp, allowing a ton of Speedlings to run by his defenses and do substantial damage to his economy. Spanishiwa, staying true to his style, kept taking expansion, teching and droning hard while denying all of Terran’s aggression. Eventually Spanishiwa got his favorite unit composition out (Queens, Infestors, Brood Lords, Speedlings) and moved out across the map. Terran just wasn’t able to handle this Zerg army (especially with with Spanishiwa Transfusing the Brood Lords) and tapped out.

Game 2: Tal’darim Alter
Spanishiwa did his standard opening expect this time he went with Roach play instead of Speedlings. Terran also fast expanded and quickly got out Medivacs. With superior mobility, Terran was able to harass all over the map by dropping Marines at every one of Spanishiwa’s expansions. Eventually Spanishiwa managed to get Ultras and Infestors on the map, but by then Terran had a massive MMM + Tank push in the works. Spanishiwa was forced to GG when he ran out of money and couldn’t defend against the Tank push.

Game 3: Terminus RE
Terran opened the game with a fast expansion and lots of Rax. Spanishiwa stuck with his standard opening of fast expand into Speedlings. He continued to sit back, taking bases and teching up to Brood Lords, Infestors and Ultras. Terran again went with heavy drop play denying almost every expansion for Spanishiwa outside of the two naturals. Once Spanishiwa had his massive force built, he moved across the map looking to pressure Terran. Thanks to some nice Tank placement and some sexy EMPs and Snipes, Terran managed to keep Spanishiwa at bay. With no place to expand and his bank account draining, Spanishiwa was forced to tap out.

Game 4: Metalopolis
As usual, Spanishiwa opened with his standard fast expand where as Terran tried another Bunker rush. This ultimately failed but, never one to be discouraged, Terran quickly shifted gears and got Blue Flame Hellions on the map. Thanks to his impressive micro, Terran was able to do massive amounts of damage to Spanishiwa’s economy. While he was busy trying to get his drone count back up, Terran was massing up for a Tank Marine push. Realizing that he had no means to defend the push, Spanishiwa quickly GG’ed.

Game 5: Typhon Peaks
Looking to recreate the success from the previous game, Terran opened up with a fast Factory with reactor. Spanishiwa did his standard opening. Again, Terran’s Hellion harass was pretty successful in damaging Spanishiwa’s economy. Looking to hard counter these Hellions, Spanishiwa got some Roaches on the field. Unfortunately for him, Terran was already moving across the map with Marines, Mauraders and Tanks. Sieging up between the natural and main of Spanishiwa, Terran was able to inflict massive amounts of damage, eventually causing Spanishiwa to GG.

Both players put on a fantastic show and should be happy with their performances. Unfortunately for Spanishiwa he will not end up matching CrunCher’s four-time champion of The V record and will be forced to hand his crown over to Sixjax.Terran. Be sure to tune in next week to see if Terran can continue the streak.

Weekend Update: April 30th – May 1st

Weekend Update: April 30th – May 1st

by Alex “Yeunanimous” Yue

This past weekend saw some awesome SC2 action. While the TSL3 was taking a break, the NASL, IGN Pro League and The V did more than enough to make up for it. Without any further adu, here’s the Weekend Update.

NASL

Starting off with Saturday’s episode of the NASL, gamers were treated to some amazing games. The first match saw Brat_OK going up against ROOT Catz. Going all the way to three games, Catz fought hard but just couldn’t hold out against the Russian monster that is Brat_OK. Match two was between Team Liquid’s Ret and the meching Terran Goodie. Ret was on top of his game and shut Goodie down 2-0. Game three was a TvT between SeleCT and coL.Stalife. Unfortunately for Stalife, things just weren’t going his way and ultimately SeleCT won 2-0. Game four saw HasuObs crush Machine, continuing the 2-0 theme of the night. The last match of Saturday saw the Kratos Protoss MC take on StarTale’s ACE. Apparently ACE had the Titans on his side allowing him to shut down MC 2-0.

Sunday’s episode started off with the Taiwanese Zerg Sen vs. the American Terran PainUser. Sen’s aggressive style was just too much for PainUser, allowing him to win 2-0. Game two saw the infamous Zerg IdrA take down Mouz.MaNa 2-0. Game three was a TvT between the Italian beast Cloud and the Canadian monster Drewbie. Cloud proved to be too much for Drewbie taking him down 2-0. Game four saw none other than “The Emperor” SlayerS_BoxeR vs. the Korean Zerg Zenio. “The Emperor” tried his best, but ultimately fell to Zenio 2-1. The last match of the weekend was Liquid`Tyler vs. Socke. Despite his best efforts the American Protoss Tyler just couldn’t hold out against Socke’s aggressive Protoss style. Socke won 2-1.

IGN Pro League

IPLThis weekend was the conclusion of season 1 of the IGN Pro League. The semi-finals, held on Saturday, saw IdrA take on SeleCT. In a stunning back and forth series, IdrA’s usage of Brood Lords proved too powerful for SeleCT, allowing him to move onto the finals with a score of 3-2. This loss put SeleCT down in the losers bracket where he was forced to take on ROOT Gaming’s KiWiKaKi. Despite his best efforts, SeleCT just couldn’t get past KiWiKaKi. With a final result of 3-2, ROOTKiWiKaKi moved onto the finals where he faced off against Idra.

The final match started out pretty rough for IdrA. He lost the first two matches, and even allowed KiWiKaKi to get a MotherShip out on the field. Despite this two game deficit, IdrA managed to get his head back in the game winning out the last three matches, making him the Season 1 champion of the IGN Pro League.

The V

The 14th edition of The V featured current champion Spanishiwa and his unique Zerg style going toe-to-toe with Fnatic’s Terran player KawaiiRice. Much like last week’s edition, KawaiiRice managed to take Spanishiwa to game six, but was unable to overcome the new Zerg phenom’s style. Congratulations to Spanishiwa on becoming a three-time champion of The V. If he wins this week’s edition, he’ll be tied up with coL.CrunCher for longest winning streak in The V. Be sure to tune in this Friday to see if Spanishiwa has it in him.
