Stalife vs VT|Spades – IGN Pro League

April 24th, 2011

Postgame

Tonight’s episode of the IGN Pro League featured compLexity’s Stalife taking on VT Gaming’s Spades in the lower bracket. This TvT match really highlighted to true power of the macro Terran style.

The first game was on Xel’naga Caverns. Stalife opened up with the standard one one one build getting out some early Marines, Siege Tanks, and a Banshee. Spades went with a one Rax fast expand, eventually fielding the standard Marine/Marauder/Tank unit composition. Stalife was the first get aggressive applying pressure to Spades’ natural. Spades managed to hold, but received significant damage to his economy. While the battle was going on, Stalife managed to get an expansion up and crank out more Tanks, Marines and a few Medivacs. One he massed up enough for a second push, Stalife hit Spades’ production faculties by sieging his Tanks on the low ground and elevator dropping his Marines in the main. In fact, Stalife used his patented “Stalife Drop” to do a little extra damage to Spades’ Tanks. Although he cleaned up the attack, Spades received a great deal of damage and was never able to fully recover from it. Again, while the attack was going on Stalife expanded again, this time to the gold. With a significant lead in both economy and production, Stalife was able to set up a contain and eventually whittle down Spades.

Game two was on Shakuras Plateau and saw Spade do the same fast expand build seen in the first game. Stalife also did the one one one again, but this time going to Cloaked Banshees to harass his opponent’s mineral line. Unfortunately for Stalife, Spades had already gotten Missile Turrets up and really limited the amount of damage the Banshees could deal. One the Banshees were forced to turn around, the game turned into a standard TvT with both players building tank lines cutting the map in half. For the first half of the game Spades had air dominance thanks to a few Vikings. Eventually Stalife managed to take air dominance and get a fifth expansion up. This extra expansion would prove critical to Stalife’s game because it allowed him to out macro Spades. Essentially, the game continued with both players throwing their armies at each other until Spades over extended. Stalife, because of his macro advantage, always was able to re populate his army. Spades, on the other hand, was quickly losing resources and was forced to GG when Stalife contained Spades’ main allowing him to plunders his only two mining bases.

Congratulations to Stalife for his outstanding play tonight. He proved that his TvT is of the highest caliber and that he is a force to be reckoned with.

CrunCher vs d.NaNiwa – TSL3

April 23rd, 2011

Post Game

Game 1 – Metalopolis
The first game was an extremely short game. Cruncher started off with a proxy pylon and built two forward gateways there. With an excellent scouting probe, Naniwa finds Cruncher’s buildings and takes the necessary precautions, building as many units as he could to defend. As Cruncher attacked, NaNiwa is able to defend cruncher’s early aggression with some excellent micro. The only thing Cruncher could do was build more and more units, but they were not dealing enough damage. With no tech structures, and no way to defend his two forward gateways, CrunCher gives the first game to Naniwa.

Game 2 – Shakuras Plateau
The second game’s action starts off with Naniwa stealing one of Cruncher’s gases to put him behind. Naniwa then walled off his choke with two adjacent gateways. Cruncher built a three gate into a hidden Star gate. Cruncher pushes forward with three phoenixes and manages to pick off a sentry and the first colossus from Naniwa, putting him at a huge advantage. Naniwa decides to attack with a mass of units, but with two excellent force fields, Cruncher was able to put that push to a halt, increasing Cruncher’s lead in both workers and upgrades. With constant harassment on Naniwa’s mineral lines with his phoenixes, Cruncher managed to maintain his lead in resources. As Naniwa realizes that there is not much for him to do, he decides to move up and do some damage to Cruncher’s third expansion. As soon as he started attacking, Cruncher came up behind and trapped Naniwa in a corner. With almost 6 more colossi than Naniwa, Cruncher decimated Naniwa’s army and takes the second game.

Game 3 – GSL Tal’Darim Altar
The third game sees both players opening up with a four gate. Naniwa builds a very early Twilight Council and researches a very early blink (at about 5:30). Naniwa decided to push up with his early blink stalkers and are able to pick off a couple of Cruncher’s forces in the middle of the map. With his early advantage, Naniwa keeps pushing. Realizing that he is in trouble, Cruncher built a Forge, and couple of Photon Cannons and a Robotics Bay. As Naniwa attacked Cruncher’s base, Cruncher is forced to pull his probes off of the mineral line to defend his base losing the majority of them. With only a handful of stalkers and three immortals, Cruncher could not defend his base against the mass amount of stalkers Naniwa had, and so the third game goes to dignitas.Naniwa.

Game 4 – GSL Terminus RE
This game starts off with Cruncher stealing a gas from Naniwa, which forced Naniwa into a four gate build. Naniwa proceeded to build a proxy pylon in front of Cruncher’s base and before Cruncher could destroy it, a round of four stalkers were warped in. Cruncher was able to defend the first and second wave of attacks using some excellent micro. With the proxy pylon still in place, Naniwa continued to warp in units to increase his army size. As Cruncher was limited to only one base, he started to build Colossi and mass zealots. Cruncher decided to push out of his base once he had enough units and the colossi were able to inflict enough damage to destroy Naniwa’s entire force of blink stalkers. Cruncher then destroyed Naniwa’s base winning the game and pushing the series to a fifth and final game.

Game 5 – Xel’Naga Caverns
The game starts off with a very early scout to Cruncher’s base; however Cruncher was able to kill the scouting probe due to a positioning mistake on Naniwa’s part. Cruncher then steals a gas and forces Naniwa into a four gate because of his advantage. Cruncher builds a proxy pylon at the Xel’Naga Watchtower while Naniwa builds a proxy pylon as well. Cruncher’s initial attack was held off and Naniwa decided to do a very heavy counter attack utilizing his proxy pylon. With not enough units to defend his base, Cruncher gives in resulting in the final score 3-2 for dignitas.Naniwa.

Round of 8

Starting today (Sunday) at 2:00PM EST, CompLexity’s Abdulaziz ‘CrunCher’ Abed will take on Dignitas Gaming’s Johan “NaNiwa” Lucchesi in the Team Liquid Star League round of 8. This will be CrunChers first non-PvZ matchup in the event, but in anti-climatic fashion, today’s match will be a dreaded PvP.

Protoss 4Gate to be Addressed in Next Patch

April 22nd, 2011

In a post by Kapeselus, a community manager at Blizzard, he mentions that Blizzard is currently looking into the 4Gate by Protoss players.

According to him, it is possible that the fix will come in the form of a nerf or reduced build times, however this has not been made clear yet.

Below is the entire post from Kapeselus:

Hello to you, Protoss players. I am coming with a gift of information that some of you may find interesting!

We have been looking into the 4gate issue and our designers have played with a lot of different fixes and changes, even those that were not strictly numbers related. While strong, 4gate is a lesser problem in other matchups, but we recognize that PvP is a different story.

Just throwing a nerf bat at warpgates would make protoss weak in early game. This is why we are currently looking at increasing warpgate research time, while at the same time compensating for it with reducing build time of protoss tier 1-1.5 units (though build times reduced only for gateways, cooldowns will stay the same for warpgates). This is an example of a fix you may see, but our developers plan to explore further options, before the patch officially hits.

We will address 4gate in the next patch.

Stalife vs ROOTKiWiKaKi – IGN Pro League

April 21st, 2011

Post Game

In today’s debut of the IGN Pro League eSports fans were treated to a fantastic series between ROOTKiWiKaki and compLexity’s Stalife.

The first match was on Xel’naga Caverns and saw Stalife go with a quick 3 Rax with Stim. Kiwikaki, on the other hand, went with a 3 Gate fast expand build, giving him the economic edge for pretty much the whole game. After Stalife held off KiwiKaki’s initial pressure, he brought out a fast Ghost for some EMPs. Both players took turns going on the offensive, each holding off the others attacks. KiwiKaki eventually transitioned into Colossus, putting Stalife firmly behind considering he had yet to get his Factory up, much less a Starport. With map control ensured with the Colossus, KiwiKaki took both a third base and a fourth at the gold. With such a strong economic edge, KiwiKaki was able to roll over Stalife’s Marauders and Vikings.

Game two was on Tal’Darim Alter and saw Stalife open with the standard one Rax, one Factory, one Starport build with the intent to get Banshees and Siege tanks out. KiwiKaki again went with early Gateway pressure. Despite having a bunker up, Stalife was unable to hold the front line. While there was fighting in Stalife’s base, there was a Banshee knocking off KiwiKaki’s Probes. Regardless of this harass, Stalife invested too much money in tech and just couldn’t get enough units out to hold off KiwiKaki and was forced to GG.

While Stalife lost tonight’s match, that doesn’t mean he’s out just yet. The IGN Pro League has a losers bracket, meaning that Stalife still have a chance to come back.

IGN Pro League

Tonight, compLexity’s Stalife is set to play his first match in the IGN Pro League , taking on KiWiKaKi from ROOT Gaming. This is the first week of the IGN Pro League so both players will be looking to make their mark early on in the season.

The match is set to begin at 8PM EST.

CrunCher vs EG.iNcontroL – NASL

April 21st, 2011

Post Game

In tonight’s episode of the NASL compLexity’s CrunCher took on the face of the league, Evil Geniuses’ iNcontroL. In a thrilling best of three series, both players put on a show they can be proud of.

Game one was on Terminus RE and saw iNcontroL open with a defensive 4 Gate. CrunCher initially went with a 3 Gate poke into Stargate, but when his poke got caught, iNcontroL quickly went on the offensive. Once iNcontroL’s Pylon was up, it was no holds barred aggression. CrunCher was forced to cancel his Stargate, putting down a Twilight council only to cancel that in order to squeeze out a few more units to hold the line. After beating back iNcontroL’s aggression with absolutely stunning micro,  CrunCher went in for another poke. This time he was just seeing what iNcontroL had and then quickly  retreated. iNcontroL massed up another force and went for one last push. Thanks to CrunCher’s Force Field placement, he was able to buy enough time to get a Colussus out, which made quick work on iNcontroL’s army forcing the GG.

Game two was on Crossfire SE. CrunCher opened with an aggressive 4 Gate rush. iNcontroL went with another defensive 4 gate build. Thanks to some slick Force Field play on the ramp, iNcontroL managed to hold off the 4 gate rush. Rather than pushing out, iNcontroL sat back and teched to a Robo eventually getting out some Colossus. Realizing that he was way behind from the failed push, CrunCher took a major risk by expanding to a Gold base while getting a Stargate and pumping out Phoenix. iNcontroL massed an army of Blink Stalkers and Colossus and went in for the kill. Despite having the economic lead and an even army size, CrunCher just couldn’t hold iNcontroL’s pressure and tapped out.

The final game was held on Backwater Gulch and saw both players open with a 3 Gate build. CunCher faked like he was going to 4 Gate rush iNcontroL, when in reality he was quick teching to Colossus. Because he thought an attach was incoming, iNcontroL massed up units, meaning he was slightly behind in terms of tech. Despite these mind games, no real aggression occurred for some time. iNcontroL was able to sit back, get out a few Colossus and switch tech to Phoenix. CrunCher on the other hand stuck with Colossus and took a third base. Once iNcontroL showed his Phoenix, CunCher switched tech to Templar for Feedback. Unfortunately CrunCher was too late in switching tech path and just couldn’t keep his Colossus up under the constant fire from iNcontroL’s Phoenix and was forced to GG.

Both players put on a phenomenal show and should be extremely proud of their play. It’s important to note that the NASL is not an elimination tournament, so CunCher still has plenty of games ahead of him. Be sure to tune into the NASL this Saturday as coL.Stalife will be taking on Star Tale’s Ace.

NASL – Week 2

Tonight, compLexity’s CrunCher finds himself in action in the North American Star League taking on iNcontroL from Team EG. Both players won their first match in the NASL and will be looking to take an early lead in the division 2 standings.

The match is set to begin between 11PM and Midnight EST, however the NASL stream will kick off at 9PM EST as qxc takes on TT1, Moman takes on Darkforce and White-Ra takes on Sjow in the matches prior.

IGN ProLeague VODs Free and in HD

April 20th, 2011

Tomorrow will mark the debut of IGN’s new Starcraft II ProLeague. Up until recently, a lot of the details surrounding the league have been pretty vague, especially regarding how the games will be streamed and if VODs will be available.

Today, via facebook, the IGN ProLague announced that “Our VODs will be: 1. In HD 2. 100% Free 3. Available to everyone.”

Now this may not seem like big news, however when you consider how the other major StarCraft II leagues distribute their content, it takes on more weight. For example, to have access to the NASL’s HD stream and VODs, you need to pay $25 for an HD pass. Even for the GSL, you need to pay $10 to watch VODs.

To check out the IGN ProLeague, head over to their website tomorrow at 8 PM EST.
