The V – Week #13

April 20th, 2011

Post Game

Game 1:
The first game of the series saw both players opening up pretty standard with Spanishwa actually building Roaches (he does not often use them). Spades started off with some marine marauder mix, and transitioned into siege tanks. Seeing this oppourtunity, Spanishiwa morphed a couple of broodlords, and with nothing to defend it, Spades threw in the hat.

Game 2: The second game started off with some excellent marine harassment by Spades, picking off a couple of Overlords. He then proceeded to decimate Spanishiwa’s mineral line with a drop of four blue flame Hellions into his base. Spanishiwa then retaliated by upgrading to infestors and sending them burrowed to Spades’ natural expansion. Some well placed Fungal Growths managed to take out a lot of Spades’ mineral line. With a massive amount of zerglings, and a couple of brood lords, Spanishiwa takes game two.

Game 3: The third game saw a fast expand from both players. Spades was able to wall off the only path to his main and natural expansion using three barracks. Because of his wall, he was able to double expand for the extra resources. Spanishiwa took the only route he found at that moment – A good old fashioned baneling bust. Although he was able to break through the defences of Spades, he was unable to defend against the counter attack as blue flame hellions were able to incinerate his resource income. The third game goes to VTSpades.

Game 4: The fourth game saw Spades building two forward Barracks for an extremely offensive play. With an excellent scouting move by Spanishwa, he was able to kill one of the SCVs building the barracks. Realizing that Spade’s plan did not work, Spanishiwa quickly attacked Spades base, making Spades lose some precious mining time. After a long mid game of upgrades and macro, Spades decided to push out with a full food count. Although he had the unit advantage, Spanishiwa had the upgrade advantage and was able to defend the attack, and win the game with a massive counter attack.

Game 5: The fifth game saw Spades attempting to wall of the entrance to his base. Spanishiwa managed to send a huge amount of zerglings through his wall, as it was not tight enough to avoid entrance. The first wave sent the mineral line of Spades’main to his natural where a second wave of zerglings had managed to kill several SCV’s. Spades responding by making mass marines that managed to deal massive damage to Spanishiwa’s natural expansion. With an attack from the higher ground, Spades was able to stop resource collection at on of Spanishiwa’s expansions which allowed him to make more units. With the massive amount of units Spades had, he pushed and was able to secure the win for the fifth game.

Game 6: The final game saw Spades looking like he had the upper hand. With a huge bioball and some Siege Tanks, he moved his army up to Spanishiwa’s base. He managed to destroy a lot of what Spanshiwa had, but Spanishiwa managed to create a couple of brood lords, and without many marines to defend against those air units, Spades ended with a “I don’t know”, “gg”. Spanishiwa has held his title as The V champion, and will return next week to defend it.

Weekend Update: April 15th-17th

Weekend Update: April 15th-17th

by Alex “Yeunanimous” Yue

This past weekend saw some crazy StarCraft II action. With the NASL, TSL3, and The V going on, it’s easy to see how someone may miss out on some of the action. That’s why I’m here giving everyone a quick rundown of the events from this past weekend.

NASL

Starting off with the NASL’s results, this weekend featured some great games and some amazing upsets. Starting with Saturday’s broadcast, the first game was between the American Terran SeleCT and the German Protoss HasuObs. Thanks to his aggressive play and abuse of mobility, SeleCT was able to win his debut match in the NASL 2-0. Match 2 saw the German Terran Goody, known for his solid mech play, take on the creative Zerg CatZ. Showing why he’s the leader of ROOT GAMING, CatZ took the match from Goody 2-0. Match 3 was between Team Liquid’s Ret and the Korean Protoss ACE from team StarTale. Unfortunately for Ret, he just couldn’t hang with ACE’s cleaver play and solid execution losing 0-2. Match 4 was between compLexity’s hero Terran Stalife and Evil Geniuses’ Zerg Machine. In a back and forth series, Stalife was able to come through and bring home a win for compLexity. The final match on Satuday was between Brat_OK VS MC. Unfortunately there was some complication and MC was unable to make the predetermined match time, forcing him to forfeit his first match in the NASL.

Sunday’s NASL broadcast saw some of the most iconic names in SC2 duking it out. Match 1 was between Evil Geniuses’ IdrA and the German Protoss Socke. Despite losing game 1 to an extremely aggressive six Gate push, IdrA was able to take the next to games winning the match. Match 2 was a PvP between Mouzsports MaNa and Team Liquid’s Tyler. Despite Tyler’s reputation as being one of the best StarCraft players in the world, Mana was able to defeat him convincingly with a score of 2-0. Match 3 was a TvT and saw Lazarus Gaming’s PainUser Vs. Meet Your Makers’ Cloud. After a lot of Siege Tank play, Cloud was able to take home a win with a score of 2-1. Match 4 was between oGs Zenio and FnaticMSI Sen. Showing off his ZvZ prowis, Sen won 2-0. The last NASL match of the weekend saw ROOT GAMING’s Drewbie take on none other than “The Emperor” himself, SlayerS_BoxeR. In an exciting back and forth TvT series, BoxeR showed the world why he’s such a legend by bringing home a 2-1 win.

TSL3

This past weekend also saw the final games in the round of 16 in the TSL3. The first match was between FnaticMSI.Sen and SlayerS_BoxeR. Holy crap was this game good. In a classic battle of TvZ, SlayerS_BoxeR (who has been having a bit of bad luck in recent games) reminded everyone why he is “The Emperor” by bringing home a win. If you only watch one game from this past weekend, make it this one. BoxeR’s creative play Vs. Sen’s fantastic macro makes it one of the most entertaining games in recent SC2 history. The second match was between the two European powerhouses mouz.HasuObs and mouz.MorroW. In this ZvP match up, HasuObs’ aggressive play style overcame MorroW’s macro. Game three saw dignitas.NaNiwa Vs. ESC.GoOdy. Proving that his absolutely stunning streak at this past MLG Dallas was no fluke, NaNiwa managed to beat GoOdy, sending him to the round of 8. The last game of TSL3’s round of 16 was between compLexity’s CunCher and Meet Your Makers’ Mondragon. Despite being a titan from the Brood War scene, Mondragon was no match for CunCher’s turtle style Protoss.

The V

Lastly, this past Friday saw week 12 of The V. This week’s edition saw ROOT Minigun take on the relativly new Zerg phenom Spanishiwa. Spanishiwa completely dominated Minigun to open up the matches, however Minigun fought his way back to force a seventh and final game. To the seventh game, Spanishiwa managed to knock Minigun’s crown off becoming the new champion of The V.

VoD’s from The V can be found here.

That’s what happened in the SC2 community over the weekend. As always, if you know about a tournament that is occurring next weekend, please leave a comment on this post with the details. That was I can be sure to include it in next week’s edition of The Weekend Update.

coL.br Released

April 18th, 2011

It is with a great sense of sadness that we must announce that we have released compLexity.Brazil effective immediately.

Heading into 2011 the squad looked to be a formidable force on the global Counter-Strike scene.  Unfortunately, internal issues have robbed the team of the stability we prized when we brought them on board.  First, the players decided to release long time teammate Bruno “bit” Fukada.  This lead us to explain to them that any further roster changes would force us to discontinue our support.  Today, Lincoln ‘fnx’ Lau quit the squad and left the team apartment with no explanation.

It was a true pleasure working with these gentlemen.  They are respectful, polite and hard working.  We will miss them and we wish them all the very best in Counter-Strike and in life.

We’d also like to thank the wonderful eSports community in Brazil for its incredible support.  Your passion for gaming should be an example to the rest of the world and we will miss interacting with your community on a daily basis.  We apologize that coL.br did not work out as we had hoped in 2011 and hope you understand our decision.  Thanks for all your support.

CrunCher vs Mondragon in TSL3

April 17th, 2011

Postgame

Today saw the last match of the TeamLiquid StarLeague 3’s round of 16. In the final match compLexity’s CrunCher took on the old Brood War veteran Mondragon from Meet Your Makers.

The first game was played on GSL Terminus RE and saw CrunCher open up with a Stargate. Mondragon on the other hand went with a double fast expand. CrunCher was the first to get aggressive moving out with a few Void Rays and Stalkers. Mondragon quickly put an end to this push with a few Queens and a ton of Roaches. Mondragon returned the favor by pushing at CrunCher’s front door. CrunCher manged to hold off the initial push, but quickly fell when Mondragon made a follow up push at the front while dropping Roaches in the back.

Game two was on Shakuras Plateau and, again, CrunCher opened up with a Forge fast expand into some Stargate play. Mondragon stuck with his Roaches and, despite constant harassment from CrunCher’s Phoenixes, managed to establish two expansions. CunCher took a third base (12 o’clock position) and began to mass up Void Rays, Colossus, and Gateway units. Keeping with the same theme of the previous game, Mondragon made several attacks at the front while simultaneously CunCher’s third base. Somehow CunCher managed to hold off every attack and, after massing up a big enough army, move out across the map forcing Mondragon to GG.

Game three was on GSL Tal’Darim Altar. CrunCher opened up with what looked like a Forge fast expand build, but after seeing Mondragon’s Hatchery before Spawning pool, it turned into a good ol’ fashion Cannon rush. Caught by surprise, Mondragon pulled all his Drones in an attempted to thwart the rush. Thanks to some clever building placement, CrunCher killed a large majority of Mondaron’s Drones and forced the GG.

Game four was on Metaopolis and CrunCher stuck to his guns using another early Stargate build. Mondragon made some adjustments and went with a Roach, Muta, Infestor unit composition. Mondragon kept CunCher on the back foot by constantly pushing out with the Roaches while harassing the main with Mutas. CunCher was able to hold off these pushes thanks to some nice Force Fields and Psy Storms. Once CunCher hit a critical mass of Gateway units, Phoenix, Void Rays and Templar, he retook the map. Despite his best efforts, Mondragon was unable to hold off CunCher’s “death ball” and was knocked out of the TSL3.

Both players put on a fantastic show with exciting games and unique play. It is important to note that Mondragon was the last Zerg player in the TSL3, so now only Protoss and Terran players are left. Be sure to tune in again next weekend when the round of 8 kicks off.

Day 6 – Round of 16

Starting today (Sunday) at 2:00PM EST, CompLexity’s Abdulaziz ‘CrunCher’ Abed will take on MYM’s Christopher “Mondragon” Semke in the Team Liquid Star League round of 16. This will be CrunChers second straight PvZ matchup in the TSL after taking down Idra in the Round of 32.
