Interview with Eafra

December 21st, 2010

We caught up with Eafra to talk about this past year and what he is up to for next year. Eafra finished 4th at WCG USA Nationals right behind his teammate Barmoa.

Hey Eafra, what have you been up to since WCG National Finals?

Hey guys! Since WCG Nationals I’ve been preparing myself for a career in social media marketing/management. That is, using the likes of Twitter and Facebook to raise a small business’ awareness on the internet. I’ve been working on a couple of projects on the side with that, but currently I am an intern at Joonbug.com. The internship is a lot of fun but I am looking for an actual job in social media/PR, so I can have a little security.

FIFA-wise, I haven’t done much of anything on the PC. I have been playing casually on the PS3, but the game isn’t suited for my style of play so I am having a tough time adapting to the styles that are owning me at the moment. Once the New Year hits I will go back to my home platform of the PC and begin training for the year’s tournaments.

With FIFA 11 now out and in full swing, what new features do you like the most?
I actually don’t like anything about the new FIFA 11 for PC. They made the options and gameplay somewhat similar to console – and everyone knows how much I hate console. Anyway, let’s just say I have A LOT of work to do if I plan on mounting a serious championship in 2011.

Just recently we saw Qatar be awarded the 2022 World Cup over the United States. What was the first thing that came to your mind and how do you feel about the decision?

Well you know how big of a fan I am of the game. With that being said, it is an absolute disgrace that FIFA chose Qatar over the USA, England, and Australia. For those of you that do not know, FIFA is sort of run like the United States Supreme Court, with every official getting a vote on the World Cup host country. These corrupt officials were obviously paid for their bids. England was told by 3 different officials that they each voted for them, but when the results came out, only 2 were presented. Australia had 2 different officials tell them they had voted for their country. The results came out, and the Aussies only had 1 vote. That just goes to show how corrupt it is already. I am not saying that USA should have been the country to host the 2022 World Cup, but it should NOT have been Qatar, despite what anyone says.

Qatar has average temperatures of +100 degrees. You try playing a 90 minute game of footy in that heat. Nightlife? Forget it! Go watch the game at the stadiums, which I have to say will be impressive, but after your team wins? Go back to your hotel and take a nap…? There is absolutely NO nightlife there. Why not England? Why not Australia? In my opinion, USA would have been amazing for another World Cup. So would England and Australia. I am not interested in going to Qatar for the World Cup. Footy fans all over the World should feel disgraced by this mockery of the system displayed by FIFA. It’s outrageous.

Best moment of 2010?

Germany in September, hands down. Berlin was absolutely amazing and I would like to thank Ryan & Creative as well as Complexity once again for that opportunity. I would LOVE to go back for CeBit. Also would like to thank Fatal1ty and Frank for showing me a good time while I was down there as well as Rony, Lisa, Natalia, Wencke, and Frank’s Mutti 🙂

What are you looking forward to in 2011?

Traveling. Representing Creative and Complexity at promo events is something I love to do. You get to meet a lot of cool people and it’s really great to learn about Creative’s new products. I am also looking forward to learning all the different styles of FIFA 11. I’m sure the Euros have some crazy, yet effective tactics already.

Any last words to close up 2010?

I just want to say that karma does exists. So make sure you are a little more tolerable of people and don’t ever judge anyone. Also, to all of my entrepreneurs out there: make money, but don’t for one second let money make you.  Cheers to a New Year. Thanks to our sponsors Creative, QPad, XFX and G8. Shout out to my boys dboorn (Derek) and chevy (Gervais), my burgers (Sloatsburrrrrrrg), and of course my Binghamton family – you guys know who you are. And to popcorn (Scott) for giving me this interview!

MLG Secures $10 Million in Funding

December 20th, 2010

In an press release by MLG today, it was announced that the organization had secured around $10 Million in funding from Legion Legion Enterprises (www.legionblog.com), a private equity firm that invests in, acquires and develops companies appealing to the 16-24 year old male demographic of digital mavericks.

With the increase in required funding by MLG, gamers are forced to consider the financial stability of the organization in terms of revenue. With this addition, Oak Investment Partners now invests over $52 Million. The Legion investment is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2011.

Below is the official release from MLG:

New York – December 20, 2010 – Major League Gaming (MLG), the world’s largest professional video game league and largest provider of cross-platform online videogame competition today announced an initial close in a $10 million financing commitment to be completed in Q1 2011. The investment was led by Legion Enterprises (www.legionblog.com), a private equity firm that invests in, acquires and develops companies appealing to the 16-24 year old male demographic of digital mavericks. Legion’s investment strategy is focused directly on a demographic group it deems to be the first in a wave of digital natives which drives the firm to make investments across four key verticals: music, sports, video games and over-the-top television. Oak Investment Partners, MLG’s primary institutional investor, joined Legion to fuel MLG’s rapid globalization and development of extensive consumer and social media offerings. The investment will bring MLG’s total funding raised to $52.5 million.

MLG’s continued growth online and in live events, ongoing success in securing global sponsors and worldwide media partnerships, and strategic acquisitions have bolstered its position as the dominant competitive video game property and made it an attractive investment property. MLG now reaches roughly 4.5 million consumers each month online, produces thousands of videos per year, and reaches more than 600,000 unique viewers per live broadcast of each weekend event during the Pro Circuit competitions. To augment the online experience for its growing community, MLG recently unveiled a freshly designed majorleaguegaming.com and will roll out extensive social networking and video capabilities over the coming months.

“At MLG we are dedicated to providing our community with the ultimate competitive video game experience both on and offline,” said Sundance DiGiovanni, CEO and co-founder, MLG. “Over the last eight years we have set out to build competitive gaming into a global, cross-platform business and thanks to investments from companies like Legion Enterprises and Oak Investment Partners, that vision is well on its way to becoming a reality.”

MLG enables a large and growing community of fans and a roster of top sponsors to connect with and celebrate the approximately 40 million consumers in North America who have a passion for playing video games as a competitive social activity. Over 95% of these viewers are male and under 30, making MLG’s live tournament broadcasts three to six times larger in the 12-34 male demographic than nearly every primetime cable property including national broadcasts of traditional, regular season sports.

Over the past few years, MLG has made strategic investments that continue its advancement in the competitive video game space including GameBattles, which is now the largest online destination for competitive console and PC gaming featuring tournaments, ladders, forums and Agora Games, the game tech company that powers online communities for some of the most popular video game franchises including “Call of Duty,” Guitar Hero,” “Transformers,” “Dance Dance Revolution,” and “MAG.” Agora technology currently tracks game-play statistics for more than 40 million gamers around the world.

About Major League Gaming

Interview with FalleN – Post Kode5

December 15th, 2010

Leading up to the event, what was the teams practice schedule like? Were you able to get much play in?

Unfortunately for us I was finishing up my army duties during the same period that we were practicing. With Kode5 right around the corner, we definitely didn’t get as much practice in as we would have liked. Once again we were all together at Bruno’s house to practice but we could only stay like that for 3 days because I had some medic exams to take and couldn’t be as available as the others.

How was the event setup? When you arrived to the LAN center, what was going through your mind?

On Friday, we arrived at the LAN center and managed to boot camp with several of the other teams. The LAN was great, however it was difficult to plug our gear in. We definitely did not imagine that this LAN would have so many problems during the event later…

The tournament was riddled with computer issues and internet problems. What problems did you, as a team, experience? What could have been done better?

To begin, we definitely can not say that the admins were not trying to fix the issues. They absolutely did their best. Our team unfortunately had problems in every game we played. Against “Hard Division” on train I got disconnected twice in the beginning with with an AWP in my hand as a Terrorist. I told them to change my computer after we lost 2 gun rounds because of that and the game was already in favor of HD 7-0. There were also several other problems, but in my opinion, most, if not all were related to the switch/network setup. It was REALLY hot inside the building and some computers crashed along with two of our headsets and 1 of our keyboards. Something really weird was happening on those days.

Did the issues with the tournament affect your gameplay at all?

All of the teams were affected by the issue at some point. Some teams were affected a lot worse, while others not so much. We can’t blame the loss on the situation though.

Going into the Grand Finals, you were to face a CNB team that you had lost to earlier in the night. Did you make any changes to your game-plan before the finals? What did CNB do well that allowed them to take first?

It’s not like we had lost to CNB earlier in the day and had time to recoup. Both matches happened late at night on the very last day of action. Our final game started at 07:00AM on Monday morning. That’s ridiculous! We couldn’t even sleep. I guess CnB deserved it since they practiced really hard for the last few months.

What can we expect from coL.br in the near future? Which tournaments will you be attending?

2010 is gone and I’m done with my army commitments. A new year is coming and we are all very excited with our new projects for this year. Currently, we are looking for an apartment in São Paulo in order to start some projects we have. These projects will change all of our lives. I can’t really tell anyone what those projects are, but I can say that they will really help the Brazilian Counter-Strike scene and its players.

We will attend the Intel Extreme Masters finals next year and will compete in any qualifiers we can find.

So guys, answering directly to the question you can expect our team to be doing all we can to reach the top and win some big events. This year will be really promising.
