ESL To Release New Anti-Cheat

September 21st, 2010

According to the ESL website, their new Anti-Cheat has reached the release-candidate stage after a closed beta of the software proved to be successful. A release candidate includes all of the final features and functions of the final piece, however it may still include several bugs that will be found from public testing. The ESL currently utilizes the ESL Aequitas Anti-Cheat, though a failed development for its second stage has resulted in a halt on the project.

Currently, the ESL is using a group of 150 testers in a closed BETA to discover bugs and “kinks” in the software. The testers are evaluating the software for any potential issues such as FPS drops, connection spikes or performence drops.

According to the ESL:

During the next few days we will plan the final “Rollout”. This means that we are now planning how to release “ESL Wire Anti-Cheat”. Maybe we will have an “Open Beta” phase before we actually start, but there are many reasons for and against doing this. Within the next few days we will again inform you about the current status.

FalleN Interviewed by HLTV.org

September 21st, 2010

HLTV.org sat down with coL.br’s Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo prior to the WCG Grand Finals to talk about the event as well as the aquisition of the FireGamers roster by CompLexity. Below is an excerpt from the interview:

What made you accept compLexity’s offer? Did you have other offers on the table?

If there was one word that could answer this question I would say opportunity. At compLexity we are able to play more international events and in our opinion that is what we need. No, there wasn’t another offer and for now I can say I doubt there is another organization that would trust in us like compLexity is doing.

Have you already started looking for an apartment to live and practice in?

We are at Bruno’s place right now. We have 5 computers here and have been spending all our time practicing. When we come back from United States we will start looking for that. We already have an idea of where this is going to be.

Judging from what your team-mates have told you, how similar is compLexity’s support to the one provided by Made in Brazil back in the day?

I’m the only one that has never played for MiBR in our team. I don’t think I can compare this situation because of that. We don’t talk too much about it.

Study: In-Game Ads Prove Successful

September 16th, 2010

Three years ago, Valve introduced in-game advertisements to CS 1.6 much to the displeasure of the loyal community. Fortunately for gamers, the ads have come and gone and the whole issue has become mute. However, a recent study by EA Games has shown proof that in-game advertisements have the potential to bring in some serious revenue for advertisers.

The study, done by The Nielsen Company, on behalf of EA Games, used a Gatorade ad placed inside six games including NHL 09 and 10, NBA Live 07, 08, and 09, and NBA Street Homecourt. The Gatorade ads were placed on various aspects of in-game scenery and apparel such as billboards, bottles, and arena banners. The study found that the in-game ads “increased household dollars spent on Gatorade by 24 percent.”

The Senior Vice President for Communications & Industry Affairs Rich Taylor of the Entertainment Software Association had the following to say:

From the insights we’ve gathered, appropriately placed advertisements in games can improve a title’s aesthetic, profibalitily, and overall playing experience. Our core demographic is 18 to 35 year olds — which is the sweet spot for anyone looking to reach a new  base. Elected officials, nonprofits, Fortune 500 companies are all looking at in-game advertising as a way to reach the highly connected and influential gamer community.

The official press release from EA regarding this study can be found by clicking here.

Interview with nak

September 16th, 2010

Following the announcement of FireGamers as the new CompLexity Counter-Strike team, coL.br, we sat down with coL.br’s captain, Renato “nak” Nakano to allow him to introduce himself and the team.

Who are you? What experience do you have with Counter-Strike? What are your accomplishments?

Hello everybody! My name is Renato Nakano, also know as “nak.” I am the current captain of coL.br. I’ve been playing professional CS since 2004, when I started on g3x, playing in my first CPL Winter in Dallas, TX. From that time until now I have already competed in twenty different countries representing Brazil’s top teams, including g3x, mibr and Rio Sinistro (CGS). I’ve won some well-known tournaments like ESWC, shgOpen, WCG-PanAmerican (3 times) and a reasonable number of Brazilian tourneys (5 WCG, 3 ESWC, 1 CPL, 2 Brasil Cup, etc).

What does it mean for the team to be a part of such a prestigious organization as CompLexity Gaming?

We feel very honored to wear compLexity’s jersey and want to say thanks for the opportunity of being in such an amazing organization. We will surely practice hard and dedicate 100% of ourselves, as to not disappoint the coL fans, sponsors, crew and the history they have behind that name. Of course, the results cant always come as we expect, but with support we can reach some our goals and the results will show up in due time. With this partnership, we finally have the ability to put together talented players and tremendous support.

Last month, you defeated EG at the WCG Pan-American Finals. What was that experience like?

We’ve defeated them in the past at events such as WCG-PanAmerican 2006 and ESL Stop Los Angeles, but this time was special. They were placing very well in many of the tournaments they were playing in while we were here practicing. They came in as the favorites, while we were the underdogs.

What is the Brazilian CS scene like? Are there a lot of teams? Are you able to play against teams from any other countries?

The Brazilian CS scene has changed a lot since the golden times when teams like g3x, GC, MiBR were fighting for the top prize. After g3x and GC folded we had a “long” period of MiBR winning it all. But in last year when this roster joined FireGamers and got a victory against MiBR in WCG 2009, things changed. MiBR have been without a team for months and CnB-Gaming has been formed. We won all the qualifiers we played in Brazil since WCG 2009. Like the US scene, we have 3 good teams fighting in the top (compLexity, CnB-Gaming, MiBR) and some other good teams like semXorah, GamerHouse, GoldenGlory etc.

Brazil is a huge place and there are situations when we play where our pings are greater than if we played a team from Europe. Sometimes, however, we can play against Wild.I, the top team in Argentina.

What leagues do you participate in online?

None. Unfortunately Brazil has no online leagues with constant matches like the US and European scenes do. Believe me, it would be outstanding training if there were.

What events are coming up for coL.br?

We are attending the WCG Grand Finals in Los Angeles, California and IEM New York (if we win our playoff match vs the Peruvian team) for now.

Any shout-outs you’d like to make?

I would like to say thanks to everybody who cheers for us and believes in our team. We wont disappoint you. Thanks to Jason Lake, Jason Bass and Alex Conroy of course (have to be nice with the bosses). I’d also like to greatly thank XFX, Creative, QPAD, G8 Brand and Sound Blaster, as without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we love. CALIFORNIA, HERE WE COME!

SC2 Teams Preview – Part 3: EG

Starcraft II Teams Preview – Part 3: EG

Any opinions expressed in this article are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of compLexity Gaming or its parent company.

by JP “Moogle” McDaniels

Welcome back to the Starcraft 2 North American Team Preview. Today we’re going to look at a team that isn’t liked that much around here, but their presence in Starcraft 2 right now cannot be denied: Team Evil Geniuses (EG).

Team EG

Starcraft II Roster

Nick ‘Tasteless’ Plott,Manager
Jacob ‘LzGaMeR’ Winstead
Geoff ‘iNcontrol’ Robinson
Kelby ‘inka’ Williams
David ‘Louder’ Fells
Greg ‘IdrA’ Fields
 Bryce ‘Machine’ Bates

One of the first North American teams to actually pick up Starcraft 2, EG has quite the dominant roster of macro style players. More recently, the addition of resident South Korean player and commentator IdrA and Tasteless really makes the team stand out, but before talking about them lets talk about the original EG members.

Geoff ‘iNcontrol’ Robinson

One of the most well-known Starcraft players here in the U.S., iNcontrol has also appeared on the popular WCG Ultimate Gamer show. He’s got a huge following and he’s a very good Protoss user as well. Alongside playing in events, it wouldn’t be rare to catch this guy casting an event as he is quite the character. When it comes down to it, there really isn’t a nicer guy in the world of Starcraft 2.

Kelby ‘inka’ Williams

The second Protoss user on the squad comes in the tiny form (hes short) of Kelby Williams. Williams is one of the hardest working Protoss users in Starcraft 2 when it comes to training. It isn’t out of the ordinary to find Williams talking to EG managers about assembling boot camps around the world to play with the best — he really wants to win. His play is quite smart and has quite a few high tournament placings. Expect a lot more in the future from this Protoss user.

David ‘Louder’ Fells

Louder is one of the older folks in Starcraft 2 but don’t let his age fool you, hes a good Protoss user as well — when he actually plays. Not a lot is known about his current playtime (or if he’s even been practicing at all). Early on in the SC2 beta he was quite the player however so if he gets back to practicing then he might make some new fans and even place in some tournaments.

Jacob ‘LzGaMeR’ Winstead

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Mr. Winstead is cheese. No, that isn’t because I’m hungry it is just how he plays. The nice thing about this resident of Lousiana though is that he can play a straight up game and actually do quite well — he is just more well-known for cheesing his opponents. One of the original adopters of the mass Reaper play in the TvZ match-up (applying pressure with 3 Barracks and Mass Reapers early game, often killing the opponent if not severely damaging his economy), Lz is one of the feared Terran users on the North American ladder.

Nick ‘Tasteless’ Plott, Manager

Originally a Random user, Tasteless switched to Terran recently, but that doesn’t much matter as he won’t be able to play anytime soon as the manager of Team EG and also a full-time shoutcaster  in South Korea for the GomTV Global Star League. Tasteless is one of the most well-known casters in the world and really only bested by his brother (Day9) in popularity. A great resource to have, Plott is very well respected in the South Korean Progamer community.

Bryce ‘Machine’ Bates

Zerg users are few and far between. Luckily, EG has one of the best in North America: Machine. Machine, while still playing arguably the weakest race right now in SC2, does quite well for himself at events, online and LAN. One of the best macro Zergs out there, I would pick Machine to really stand out once the game balances out as he puts so much  practice on a day-to-day basis.

Greg ‘IdrA’ Fields

Then, there is IdrA. Recently a member of CJ Entus (a South Korean Pro-gaming team), IdrA left the team to join with a North American squad and found EG. When you talk about IdrA in the Starcraft 2 community, most of the time you’ll hear things like ‘nerd rager’ or ‘bad mannered,’ but really he is one of the top three players in the world — easily. His practice regiment is one of the  strictest out there. He plays against the best players in the world on the South Korean Battle.net servers. He is just an all around solid player. I would say look out for this guy at any event, but you probably already know who he is.

Thats it for this week’s window into the SC2 scene. Next week we’ll take a look at Team Liquid’s roster in SC2 — one of the best!
