compLexity Welcomes SimCity; QXC Swarms Urban Management

April 1st, 2013

It is with great joy that today we can finally announce that compLexity Gaming will be branching out into the ever-growing world of City-Building games. With the release of Sim City last month, we felt that the time was right. Don’t let AI pathfinding, graphical glitches and a lack of Cheetah mode get you down! We’re confident that this roster has the population density, land value and economic fortitude to secure the throne in today’s competitive region-to-region multiplayer environment.

With this change, fan-favorite Kevin “qxc” Riley will be making the transition from the coL.SC2 roster to coL.SimCity. Kevin had this to say about the move:

“I believe that this a natural progression for me. It’s been an amazing run, but bunker rushes don’t compare to the pure adrenaline of urban management. I’d like to thank my teamates for their support and the Sim City servers for staying online long enough for me to master the game.”

coL.Sim City

  • Jason “1” Lake
    • Specialty: Business City
  • Scott “Popcorn” Ford
    • Specialty: Gambling/Entertainment City
  • Brian “Ghost Outlaw” Jackson
    • Specialty: Sewage Treatment
  • Kevin “qxc” Riley
    • Specialty: Macroeconomics/Mining

Once again, we’d like to welcome the new team! Stay tuned for further news regarding coL.Sim City, as they will be competing in online-only events (due to the lack of offline gameplay) throughout the coming months. Also, check out the new coL.DotA team!

coL.LoL vs GGU and CLG in LCS Week 7

March 31st, 2013
compLexity 4-12 VS 4-12 GGU

Today, coL.LoL will take on both GGU and CLG for the rest of their 7th week matches in the League of Legends Championship Series.

Post-Game

After nearly an hour long game, GGU overcame coL.LoL. Both teams were playing completely even throughout the match. It only took one failed engagement to turn the game into GGU’s favour. Good Game Univeristy used Twisted Fate’s global ultimate to pick off Lautemortis as Shen to deter him from split pushing. After getting caught out by it one too many times, GGU had the advantage and moved in for the win. These two teams are now 1-1 in their head-to-head record.

Pre-Game

In the second match of this week, coL.LoL will be facing off against Good Game University where they look to overcome them in the season rankings by earning a win. With both teams at a win/loss of 4-12, this match is crucial for both teams as it can change the current season standings. The current head-to-head record is 1-0 in favour of coL.LoL, and they look to extend that record to 2-0. With GGU on a current hot streak, they are not to be underestimated. Good Game University’s current roster is ZionSpartan (Top Lane), NintendudeX (Jungler), Jintae (Mid Lane), DontMashMe (AD Carry) and BloodWater (Support). This game is scheduled to play at 2PM PDT / 5PM EDT.

compLexity 4-12 VS 9-10 CLG

Post-Game

Despite gaining an early lead and holding onto it during the match, Counter-Logic Gaming was able to come out on top of coL.LoL. Although coL.LoL came out on top of a couple of the teamfights, a bad decision to push mid while CLG pushed their bottom inhibitor turret left their base open and exposed forcing coL.LoL to take the defensive. Even after securing the first Baron of the game, the map pressure of losing that bottom inhibitor was too strong and coL.LoL were limited to their side of the map. One final teamfight that ended in favour of CLG allowed them to push into coL.LoL’s base and secure the kill onto their nexus. These teams are now 0-3 in favour of CLG in their head-to-head record.

Pre-Game

The final match this week is against Counter-Logic Gaming. This veteran team currently has the 2-0 lead over coL.LoL in their head-to-head record. With CLG currently on a cold streak, coL.LoL intends to keep them there as they battle it out for an ever so crucial win. The last game these two saw each other was in the fourth week where coL.LoL started off strong, but were unable to remain in the lead as CLG had a very strong harass team composition. This week, after watching CLG play more games, coL.LoL is prepared to go against them and make their head-to-head record a possible 2-1. CLG’s roster consists of HotshotGG (Top Lane), Chauster (Jungler), Link (Mid Lane), Doublelift (ADC), and Aphromoo (Support). This match is scheduled to play at 4PM PDT / 7PM EDT.

coL.LoL vs MRN in LCS Week 7

March 30th, 2013
compLexity 3-12 VS 5-10 MRN

Post-Game

In their first match of this weekend coL.LoL was able to take the win over Team MRN, making their head-to-head record 1-1. Relentless harass and well coordinated team fights proved to be too much for MRN to handle. Establishing an early lead by taking down objectives and outfarming MRN, coL.LoL was able to maintain their lead throughout the rest of the game. After coming out on top of a few 5v5 team engages and taking out turrets after each fight, coL.LoL was eventually able to enter MRN’s base and destroy the nexus for their fourth win the the League of Legends Championship Series.

Pre-Game

Starting off the seventh week of the League of Legends Championship Series, coL.LoL sees themselves facing Team MRN. Last week, Team MRN took the win against coL.LoL in their first match-up of the season. Eager to tie up their head-to-head record, coL.LoL know there is no room for errors in this match. Now that the season is coming to its final weeks, a win counts more than ever, and so the standards of gameplay have increased substantially. Both teams know the importance of a win in this game, and so the best efforts can be expected.

This match is scheduled to begin at 4PM PDT / 7PM EST

CA.SC2’s Kyo Wins Beyond Gaming Ladder Tournament

March 30th, 2013

Last night the compLexity Academy’s own Kyo won the Beyond Gaming Ladder tournament. With an astounding record of 42 wins and only 4 losses, Kyo dominated the competition with a 91.3% winning percentage. For his efforts Kyo earned himself over $300 worth of prizes.

We at compLexity wanted to congratulate Kyo on this fantastic achievement. It is obvious that his hard work is paying off. Be sure to keep an eye on this young talent. We have a feeling that when he gets his shot at a major tournament he will make quite the splash.

Tyler “Lautemortis” Nicholls
We go into most matches confident; Obviously against some teams we are more confident than others. We had a plan against MRN in week 6 but in champion select we opted to vary it which threw us all off our game.
Samuel “Chuuper” Chu
Experience is the biggest difference between a us and the top 4 teams. The teams at the top of the standings are all more accustomed to mid and late game scenarios. As a team we need to have a better grasp on how to push an advantage.
Josh “brunch U” Abrantes
During games, the more established teams might be down early, but as soon as it passes 25 minutes, they know what to do to turn it around while lesser experienced teams like ourselves struggle. They’re good at grouping and getting objective control later in the game — they have far more chemistry and experience together than us.
Abe “M eye A” Nguyen
Most of the top teams have been in a professional League scene for a long time. In our case, we are still finding the best practice schedules and strategies for our team. As for Curse, I think they have found a roster of experienced players that meshes really well.
Nick “Nickwu” Smith
I’ve started to get less nervous when playing. I just focus on my game and matchup and try to do the best. Beating Dignitas was one of the best feelings ever then to go 0-3 next week was devastating.

Bot lane can take double golems on BLUE which means you have an advantage over RED side bot lane. Its disadvantageous to lane swap your ad/supp top because you lose dragon pressure. Also BLUE side has first pick which means you can take a good champ.
Samuel “Chuuper” Chu
I also feel as though BLUE is the better side. First pick advantage is pretty big.
Josh “brunch U” Abrantes
The angle of playing is far more comfortable for me on BLUE. Baron control is incredibly imbalanced for BLUE, but the counterpart is dragon control is imbalanced for RED. BLUE bot lane gets double golem advantage which is a significant lane-making factor. Ganking top lane is easier on BLUE as well, but ganking bottom lane on RED is easier so there’s a small mix of counter balance as well.
Abe “M eye A” Nguyen
I believe that the map is balanced overall. BLUE has the advantage of first pick and double golems on the lower half of the map for the duo bot lane.
Nick “Nickwu” Smith
I understand that bottom side BLUE has an advantage because of double golems. I’m not too sure what other advantages BLUE side has in terms of the layout of the map. BLUE side also gets first pick and that’s very crucial with how many first pick worthy champions there are. I think the map is overall pretty balanced though.

Tyler “Lautemortis” Nicholls
There’s a big difference in knowledge between us and the mid to top teams. Our strategies can sometimes take them by surprise and mechanically we are not far inferior. Curse on the other hand has shown tremendous teamwork and coordination which is one of the hardest things to learn as a team and something we are still striving to accomplish.
Samuel “Chuuper” Chu
When we scout another team we mainly try to find out what their comfort picks are. From there, we’ll try to understand how their comp works and find out if there are any weaknesses. Then we’ll look at replays and analyze their level 1’s and see if they have any habits and tendencies that we can take advantage of.
Josh “brunch U” Abrantes
Our mindset is the same every game: do our best to win and learn from our triumphs and failures and expand our play style.
Abe “M eye A” Nguyen
We prepare similarly for all the teams we play. We try to develop a game plan tailored to each opponent. In the case of our Week 5 match against Dignitas, we had a solid strategy that went almost exactly how we planned. In the case of the week 6 MRN game, our strategy was not as effective.
Nick “Nickwu” Smith
We’ve definitely had a tough first half of the season. The difference between us and the top teams is experience. A Team like Curse is not only more experienced but now they also are more focused. They practice much harder then people give them credit for and that practice has made them mesh extremely well as a team.

Tyler “Lautemortis” Nicholls
I like playing in the morning because watching the other LCS matches gets me tired before we play. We probably perform the best earlier in the morning.
Samuel “Chuuper” Chu
I mainly like playing and practicing in the mornings because it’s much more quiet. It’s easier for me to concentrate and work on my game. I don’t believe the time of day affects our play as a team.
Josh “brunch U” Abrantes
I prefer to play in the afternoon. This is the prime hour for scrimming since most gamers don’t really get up until about 12:00 PM anyway. At the Riot Studio we all hang out and watch the games together and make fun of Chuuper.
Abe “M eye A” Nguyen
We typically practice during the afternoon and evening, but we don’t mind playing any time.
Nick “Nickwu” Smith
I don’t have a big deal on play time preference. I guess I prefer the afternoon so I can sleep in a bit more. I don’t think our team performance has been hindered by time of play even if it was early in the morning. Anytime we are supposed to play we should be ready to do so.

I like playing during the weekend, but honestly all the days have melded together so I can’t say it really makes a difference.
Samuel “Chuuper” Chu
I don’t really believe we play better or worse on any particular day of the week.
Josh “brunch U” Abrantes
I’d prefer to practice Monday through Friday and have weekends off, but that’s not the case.  We currently get one day off, sometimes two after LCS matches.
Abe “M eye A” Nguyen
To be honest, it is hard to keep track of the days — everything goes by so quickly. Personally, I don’t have a preference in terms of what days of the week we play.

I’m fine with the standard way its been, with most of our games on Thursday and Friday. I don’t think our team would perform any better on the other days.

Getting to know The Academy: AGIANTSMURF

March 26th, 2013

Last month The compLexity Academy added two new players its StarCraft II squad: Poo & AGIANTSMURF. Recently compLexity Academy commissioner Michawl “Twixz” Shane sat down with Marcus “AGIANTSMURF” Bazan to help the community learn a little more about him and his history with StarCraft II.

Hi Marcus. Before we really get into your StarCraft II history, why don’t you introduce yourself and give us a little background on you?

Hi, my name is Marcus Bazan. I am an avid community member and player of Starcraft II. I participate on numerous forums, most notably Reddit where I go by the I.D. “AGIANTSMURF”. In am also a Grandmaster Protoss player recently picked up for the compLexity Academy. I was born and raised in the state of NY and I am currently a college student attending The City College of New York.

What is your history with StarCraft and RTS games?

My blizzard RTS experience goes back to WarCraft III. I had a friend that I played WC3 with, who later introduced me to StarCraft: Brood War. I mostly played Brood War just for the custom games, while WarCraft III kept most of my attention. When StarCraft II launched I debated purchasing it due to my lack of interest in the original, however after reading so many good reviews I decided to pick up. I immediately got hooked on the Ladder system and wanted to climb as high as possible. I soon began searching the web for ways to get better and found my way to community sites such as teamliquid.net and Reddit’s /r/starcraft board. Since the launch of StarCraft II I have been playing competitively and climbing the ladder. I have played on numerous amateur teams and in online cups/tournaments and have continued to improve through the expansion Heart of the Swarm.

What are your favorite things about StarCraft II?

What really got me into StarCraft II was initially how awesome the game looked graphically, as well as the competitive ladder system. I couldn’t get enough of how the ladder pushed you to keep climbing higher and ensured you were always playing an opponent of equal or similar skill. Had the matchmaking system not been so precise I might have quit long ago.

Outside of the game itself, my developing passion for the game introduced me to many other like-minded players and helped me to find an amazing community of people to communicate with and even more amazing friendships that might not have been otherwise possible. Heart of the Swarm’s release has rekindled the interest of many players all around, and has given the opportunity for many new up and coming players such as myself a fresh start and chance to burst into the professional scene.

As we all know, Heart of the Swarm came out this month and really shook up the eSports scene. What are your thoughts on HotS?

The largest difference about HotS aside from the obviously new units and strategies is blizzards approach at supporting eSports. They have introduced many new and exciting features which are aimed at moving the competitive scene forward. Features such resume from replay, players near you, as well as privacy settings regarding match history and build orders will help professional players do what they do even more effectively. With the new leveling system as well as an unranked ladder, Blizzard is also showing they are willing to cater towards the not so competitive population of StarCraft II players.

There are many opinions out in the community on how Blizzard is doing regarding the direction of StarCraft II and eSports. What are your thoughts on this?

I would absolutely say the game is headed in the right direction, however there is still work to be done. The community has made clear the features they’d like to see out of Blizzard, such as the online automated tournaments featured in WarCraft 3 as well as a long overdue improvement to the arcade section. Blizzard has done a lot of great things with Heart of the Swarm (many of them also available to those still playing Wings of Liberty) and I’m excited to see what else they may have upcoming in terms of improvements.

What are your goals for StarCraft II?

I have many goals I’d like to achieve during my time playing StarCraft. Since competition is what drives me to play this game the most, my number one goal is and always has been to become a respected professional player throughout the scene. As a part of that, I have long desired the experience of playing on a main stage in front of a large crowd for a major tournament such as MLG or NASL. A more personal goal has always been to receive an invite to speak on a show such as State of the Game.

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy practice schedule to talk with us. Are there any shoutouts you’d like to give?

I would like to thank compLexity Gaming for adding me to their Academy roster and granting me the opportunity to help push my name and become more well known. Shout out to my awesome teammates and practice partners. Special shout out to all my friends from the NY area who have helped me to maintain my passion for the game, and while many of them have since retired, thanks to those who still show their support and cheer me on whenever I am competing.

Again we at compLexity would like to thank Marcus for taking the time out of his busy schedule to speak with us. The compLexity Academy strongly believe in growing the North American StarCraft II scene by supporting our players and giving them a chance to get in the community’s spotlight.
