coL.LoL vs CLG in LCS Week 4

March 1st, 2013
compLexity 1-7 VS 6-4 CLG

Post-Match Report

In a hard and long super week, coL.LoL finished with another loss against CLG. Despite establishing an early lead by Brunch U getting an early first blood onto Doublelift and Lautemortis sucessfully ganking top lane to secure Nickwu a kill onto HotShotGG, CLG was able to quickly bring the match back into their favour and overall take the win. CLG suppressed any initiation from coL.LoL by using the power of Link’s Nidalee spears to deal massive damage. With the high amount of poke damage, there was not much that could be done and CLG had openings to easily take objectives. With a hard end to a hard week, coL.LoL will be back to the drawing board trying to get more practice in and getting ready for their next matches in the upcoming weeks.

Pre-Match Report

After a long and grueling super week, coL.LoL has yet to win a match. There is one last chance for the team to earn one win this week as they take on CLG tonight at 6PM PST / 9PM EST. This is a rematch between the two teams. The last time these teams went head-to-head, it was even until the late game pressure from CLG proved to be too much for coL to handle. Now that they have more game experience and more time to practice as a cohesive unit, coL.LoL look to give CLG a run for their money. Although CLG has a seasoned roster consisting of HotshotGG (Top Lane), Chauster (Jungler), Link (Mid Lane), Doublelift (ADC), and Aphromoo (Support), coL.LoL plans to bring new strategies and fresh vibes to the game.

coL.Lautemortis: “We realized how much practice was required…”

February 28th, 2013

compLexity.LoL’s Jungler and most experienced player, Tyler “Lautemortis” Nicolls, discusses his squad’s LCS play and transition to living in Los Angeles, California. With the team off to a slow 1-6 start, they’ll need to capitalize on the remainder of this week’s overloaded schedule, or risk falling into the basement of the LCS.

First off, what did you guys do after your first LCS win on Friday. Any celebratory events? More GLEE sing-alongs?

We went home and started practicing for our next set of matches. After experiencing the joys of winning, we realized how much practice was required to continue feeling that way. We did find some time to relax and sing though.

Prior to the match GGU boasted about implementing their cheese strategy (however, it didn’t work.) Do you guys plan on doing something innovative in the weeks to come or stick with a more traditional play style?

We have a few tricks up our sleeves if the picks/bans go our way. We’re trying to remain very flexible in champ select and adapt to styles that beat our opponent’s team composition.

Speaking of champ select, some of the community has questioned the picks you guys have made as a team, such as Soraka and Kog’Maw. What goes into your selection thought process after the bans are down?

We primarily pick for overall team composition. We’ll sometimes pick into weaker lanes and force our laners to deal with it until we get into team fighting.

The nature of the LCS allows you to see who you are playing several weeks in advance. How do you prepare for each of your upcoming opponents?

We write out all the picks/bans we anticipate from the other team and plan out team compositions against what they may pick.

As far as team compositions are concerned, which is your favorite and which do you dislike the most?

My favorite to run is poke because it’s really fun to watch your opponent slowly lose towers and die without being able to engage because they are all too low. The hardest to play against is split pushing because you have to micro where everyone is at all times.

What do you think are the top three Jungle champions at the moment?

Obligatory Xin / Jarvan / Vi comment. I think Voli / Hec / Elise are on the outside looking in.

Who do you think the top LCS contending team is? How do you plan on overcoming them?

CRS (Curse) has been the most consistent team thus far. We came close to beating them once; we’re hoping new strategies will keep them on their heels next time. (Interview conducted prior to matches on Super Wednesday.)

You’ve now been with compLexity for about a month. What is your relationship like with the gaming organization?

Even though the team has had a rough start to the season, the management is still very enjoyable to talk with. They help us with anything and everything! As players, it takes all the stress off of our shoulders.

What are the biggest issues your team faces? What do you see yourself working on improving?

Frustration after losing is the hardest issue we’ve faced. We all anticipated starting on a better note to the season and we know we’ve let a few wins slip through our fingers, so just staying optimistic and drawing positives out of the losses has been the biggest challenge we’ve encountered thus far.

How do you like living in Los Angeles? What are the differences coming from Idaho?

I stay inside a lot so I can’t say I’ve noticed a ton of differences. It’s really fun living with all my friends and teammates, but sometimes it can be a little hard to mask frustration. Overall it’s been really fun so far.

Have you finally gotten settled into your place? Are you on a normal scrim schedule yet?

We’re finally all settled in and have a pretty consistent scrim schedule with team MRN.

You seem to be really enjoying streaming to your fans, do you plan to stream on a regular basis after LCS settles down?

Yeah, I love all my fans. I stream occasionally and don’t have a huge following, but I truly enjoy the 70-80 people that consistently show up. They make it a lot of fun for me to play. As the season wears on and we establish ourselves (and are happier with our play) there will probably be more time to stream.

What advice do you have for someone who is looking to improve their jungling abilities that might just be starting out?

Play smart and help lanes frequently. In competitive play, farming and counter ganking are best bets. If you play intelligently in the early game, you are rarely forced into situations where you will die if you prepare accordingly!

Shoutouts?

Shoutouts to my team and compLexity for all the help they’ve given us. Shoutouts to Sound Blaster, QPAD, PNY, Creative, Origin, G8 Brand and Twitch, all the sponsors that make this dream possible! And everyone who watches my stream (you know who you are!) and cheers for us! Lots of things to be grateful for!

ESFI Interviews coL.LoL’s Nickwu

February 27th, 2013

Today, ESFI released an interview with our very own top-laner Nick “Nickwu” Smith. Below is an excerpt from the interview.

Your team scored their first win in LCS this weekend, do you feel a little less pressure now or do you think you’ll always have some sort of pressure to perform?

I think there will always be pressure to perform. It’s good to go into the next games with a win though. We’ll have the advantage of having momentum.

How did you guys celebrate the win?

We didn’t do anything too special. Just some rest and relaxation.

Read the rest of the interview HERE!

Nick and the rest of the coL.LoL will face off in three matches today in the League of Legends Championship Series. They will go against Team SoloMid, Vulcun and Curse who is on top of the standings.

coL.LoL vs TSM, Curse and Vulcun in LCS Week 4

February 26th, 2013

This week marks the first ‘super’ week in the League of Legends Championship Series. During this week, coL.LoL will be participating in five matches. The action starts on Wednesday at 1:00pm PST / 4:00pm EST where coL.LoL will play their first match against Team Solo Mid.

compLexity 1-3 VS 4-2 Team SoloMid

Post-Match Report

After an extremely fast paced early game, coL.LoL was defeated by Team Solo Mid. Five minutes into the game, tier two turrets for coL’s bot lane and TSM’s top lane were destroyed. This gave a massive influx of global gold to all players extremely early in the game. For the next six minutes, both teams were playing very safe and were focused on trying to establish an early lead. It wasn’t until Reginald’s Xerath managed to catch Lautemortis out of position that the first blood was made by a teleporting Dyrus. After catching Reginald out of position and securing the kill, coL.LoL was able to force a fight for the second dragon spawn where the managed to kill off TheOddOne and finish off the dragon. It wasn’t until TSM decided that they wanted to get baron that coL.LoL felt the pain of TSM’s Xerath pick. Acquiring the baron, TSM was able to push up all of the lanes and ultimately win the game.

Pre-Match Report

coL.LoL finished last week’s matches strong with a win against Good Game University, marking their first win of the LCS. As this is the first matchup between TSM and coL.LoL, the game can easily go either way. While coL.LoL was playing their games last week, TSM had a week off. We can only assume that TSM has been practicing hard all week, so you can never know what tricks they may have up their sleeves. With a roster of veteran players consisting of Dyrus (Top Lane), TheOddOne (Jungler), Reginald (Mid Lane), Chaox (AD Carry), and Xpecial (Support), defeating this team will require a lot of patience, accuracy, and complete coordination.

compLexity 1-3 VS 6-0 Curse Gaming

Post-Match Report

Like in all of the matches of tonight, a starting lane swap meant sub five minute turrets were taken down for both teams. This brought added pressure and mobility for both teams. Curse was able to pick up first blood due to lack of vision by coL.LoL and they were able to keep Chuuper’s Ryze at bay. Despite picking up the first dragon, coL.LoL could not get away from the aggressive Curse Gaming. While picking up several kills, Curse was able to split push lanes and apply enough pressure to win them the game.

Pre-Match Report

The second game of tonight is a rematch against Curse Gaming at 3:00pm PST / 6:00pm EST. In their first match of the LCS, coL.LoL fell to Curse after nearly securing a comeback. One of the deciding factors of that game was the superior positioning of Curse leading into team-fights. Now that coL.LoL has a couple more games under their belt and have reviewed what went wrong the first time around, they are ready for the rematch. The lineup of Curse Gaming is Voyboy (Top Lane), Saint Vicious (Jungler), NyJacky (Mid Lane), Cop (AD Carry), and Elementz (Support). Curse is currently undefeated in the LCS, and coL.LoL is looking to make that change.

compLexity 1-3 VS 3-5 Vulcun

Post-Match Report

In the final game of tonight, coL.LoL fell to Vulcun Command. Early pressure and agressiveness managed to place Vulcun in a secure lead very early into the game. Xmithie was keeping Lautemortis underlevelled and underfarmed by counter jungling and forcing him to help out other lanes. This was an important part of their strategy which worked out in their favour as the levels and items were simply not there for Lautemortis and so initiation was practically suicidal. After Vulcun grabbed the first baron and nearly got teamwiped in the process, a comeback looked viable for coL. As soon as members were back up for Vulcun they pushed hard into coL’s base killing off the nexus towers. After noticing that all of Vulcun were going back to their base, coL went in for a final effort of coming back and taking the second baron. Xmithie managed to steal the baron and coL was unable to escape which left their base wide open for Vulcun to destroy.

Pre-Match Report

The third and final game for Wednesday night at 8:00pm PST / 11:00pm EST is another rematch – this one against Vulcun. Vulcun has been on a hot streak since last week gaining their first win of the LCS and then two others against CLG and Team MRN. This shows that they are definitely a challenge and that coL.LoL will have to paly at their best in order to overcome this obstacle. Last week, coL.LoL lost to Vulcun after an insanely aggressive early game on Vulcun’s part which lead to an extreme shutout. Now that coL.LoL knows how agressive Vulcun can be, they will have to choose wisely on how they plan on countering it. Going up against Vulcun’s Sycho Sid (Top Lane), Xmithie (Jungler), mandatory cloud (Mid Lane), Zuna (ADC), and Muffinqt (Support) will definitely prove to be a challenge worth tuning in to see.

Sound Blaster Announces Eighth Invite

February 25th, 2013

We’re finally at the end! With this last qualifier finishing up it is time to announce the last invited team as well. Pikachu will join the top Heroes of Newerth squads worldwide to compete for their share of $40,000 in cash and prizes.

About Pikachu

The mostly Danish team was formed in the spring of 2012. Featuring a HoN veteran, Buch, the team quickly gained notoriety as one of the stronger teams in a time of emerging talent. With a 3rd/4th place finish in the DreamHoN Summer qualifiers the team narrowly missed going to the LAN event. Failure to qualify for DreamHack did not stop the team from training as they consistently made it to the later stages of multiple tournaments including successive MSI and It’s Gosu events. When HoN Tour rolled around Pikachu managed to qualify as one of the top 16 teams and was placed into the Diamond Division. While they’ve generally maintained Diamond status Pika has had a couple of rough brackets, falling into Gold, but taking the elevator back up each time. Despite having no major tournament victories to their name, Pikachu is a team that has showed remarkable consistency in the last 6 months, and with a bit of luck they can surely make upsets happen.

The Pikachu roster consists of:

Frederik “Buch” Petersen

21 –  Denmark

The suicide player for Pikachu boasts an impressive resume in competitive Heroes of Newerth. Throughout the last 3 years Buch has been part of teams Binary Evasion, TXL, and most notably, Infused Tt Esports. With these teams he attended multiple LANs, taking first in the huge Insomnia event in the UK, a bronze finish at DreamHack Summer 2011, and fourth in the first HoN DreamHack event, losing 4v5 to KD gaming. With Pika he is a capable suicide laner, excelling with initiators in the long lane like Pharaoh and Keeper of the Forest.

Martin “MisterP” Pettersson

19 – Uppsala, Sweden

While he got started a bit later than his rather historic teammates Buch and SemiJew,MisterP has had his fair share of successful teams. In late 2011 MisterP was part of the from Pubstars team with future tdM members Limmp and noobG. He also had a stint with DmSn, filling in the role that zai` would eventually take in the team. Since joining Pika MisterP has proven to be a valuable asset, farming his way to victory on key carry heroes like Silhouettte.

Ibrahim “Zhichi” Choule

21 – Denmark

Also known as TPSPriceless, the team captain of Pikachu manages the drafting and strat calling for the team while playing the support role in game. While Zhichi does not have a lengthy past of competitive HoN he has made his team a success, bringing home top 4 finishes in multiple MSI cups. While fourth place seems to be his comfort zone the self styled “Best in the world” is looking to make a run in the upcoming SBHL finals.

Daniel “Nir” Bolving

23 – Copenhagen, Denmark

Nir is one of the new breed of HoN players that came into the scene approximately a year ago. With early teams like You should Ran and ayyyy man Nir was able to hone his skills and make a name for himself. He was able to secure 3/4th place finishes in multiple It’s Gosu tournaments and eventually a slot on the up and coming team S00N (Soon Tour). From here the jungle player was picked up by Pika, quickly adapting and contributing to the teams success over the last half year.

Mathias-Benjamin “Semijew” Larson

23 – Malaysia

Semijew is yet another Pika player with a long history within the competitive Heroes of Newerth Scene. After breaking into the HoN scene with team iLx along future superstars NoVa, N0Tail, and Fly he was left behind as his teammates left to form the most dominant squad in HoN history, Fnatic. Semijew didn’t take long to find a new team, joining up with KD Gaming and then Evil Geniuses in mid 2011. After EG disbanded Semijew was once again teamless but returned with Team EZ in late 2011, where the all star team participated in DreamHack Winter 2011 with little success. Though Semijew’s history is studded with successes he has only just returned to the competitive HoN scene 2 months ago after yet another extended hiatus.

coL.LoL vs CLG & GGU in LCS Week 3

February 22nd, 2013
compLexity 0-2 VS 2-3 CLG

Post-Match Report

In their third game of the League of Legends Championship Series, coL.LoL was defeated by Counter-Logic Gaming. Although fighting hard to keep the game as even as possible, coL.LoL was unable to secure the comeback. During the game, Nickwu expertly utilized Shen ultimates to turn around a couple of skirmishes between the two teams. Although coL was able to secure the second dragon of the game, the pressure from all of their lanes proved to be too much and they were unable to secure any tower kills. With limited map control and the poke damage from CLG, coL.LoL’s nexus fell.

Pre-Match Report

In the second match of this week, coL.LoL is going head to head with League of Legends veteran team Counter-Logic Gaming. After the disappointing loss against Vulcun, coL.LoL is determined to get their first win in the League of Legends Championship Series. Knowing that CLG fell to both Vulcun and Dignitas in Thursdays matches proves that they are a team that can be overcome. With a roster consisting of HotshotGG (Top Lane), Chauster (Jungler), Link (Mid Lane), Doublelift (ADC), and Aphromoo (Support), coL.LoL will be facing against a team that has seen it all. Although it is not an easy task, coL.LoL is in it to win it!

They’ll face off tonight (Friday, 2/22) at 6:00pm PST / 9:00pm EST!

Post-Match Report

In their final match this week in the League of Legends Championship Series, coL.LoL came out ahead with their first win of the series. In this game coL.LoL executed superb strategies. Despite losing first blood and the first dragon, coL.LoL managed to come back with a strong win. At around 17 minutes into the game, GGU was attempting to grab the second dragon of the game. With extreme patience and discipline, Lautemortis and Chuuper managed to target down DontMashMe, eliminating most of GGU’s damage. This allowed the rest of coL.LoL to clean up the entire team of GGU and securing that second dragon. This was the major turning point of the game. Thirty-two minutes in, coL decides they are going to go for baron. This resulted in a lot of deaths for coL, but GGU’s health was very low and they wanted to get baron. When coL notices this, they utilized Shen’s ultimate to reenter the Baron pit, and although being unable to get baron, they killed four members of GGU. coL was then able to secure several towers, and maintain lane pressure by using Nickwu’s Shen to split push the lanes. When the second Baron came up, coL was able to kill it uncontested, and then pushed for their first win in the LCS.

Pre-Match Report

In the third and final match of the week, coL.LoL will go up against Good Game University. There has not been much in the way of practice between the two teams, and they have not faced off before. This means that this match can easily go either way. The current GGU roster consists of ZionSpartan (Top Lane), NintendudeX (Jungler), Shiphtur (Mid Lane), DontMashMe (AD Carry) and i am Anjo (Support). Both teams know the importance of wins this early on in the series, so you can expect the best performances from all players.
