TF2 Launches on Mac

June 12th, 2010

After years of anticipation, TF2 has finally been released on the Mac platform. To celebrate this, Valve is also offering a FREE weekend of TF2 for everyone. Valve had this to say about the release:

We’d originally planned to tease out today’s update over the course of 19 deviously brain-twisting blog posts, each containing a mercurially complex riddle hinting at the nature of the update. Unfortunately, everybody seems to have cracked the subtle rhyming codex embedded in our first blog post, which was actually supposed to be the most unsolvable of the 19.

So anyway. Team Fortress 2’s available on the Mac now.

Or is it?

No, it is. Sorry, that was Riddle #17. It seemed a shame to let it go to waste.

As part of the celebration, TF2 will be FREE to play all weekend, and 50% off to purchase. We’ve also got a little treat for anybody logging into the game from a Mac.

A trailer was also created for this occassion:

Man Plots Against CS Rival and Gets 2 Years

June 8th, 2010

A French Counter-Strike player is sentenced to two years in prison for plotting an attack to kill a rival Counter-Strike 1.6 player last November. Julien Barreaux, who is from Cambrai, France, spent six months plotting the attack by showing up to the victims home and stabbing him in the chest, only inches away from his heart. Barreaux has been recommended to undergo psychiatric tests and anger management therapy by the court.

When he eventually found the victim, Barreaux knocked on the guy’s front door, then “plunged a kitchen knife into his chest” when Mikhael opened it to greet him. He missed his heart by an inch.

A local police officer told the courts “Barreaux was arrested within the hour and told us he had wanted to see his rival wiped out for killing off his character.”

The judge, who locked him up for two years on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm, says of Barreaux, “You are a menace to society. I am frankly terrified of the disproportionate reaction you could have if someone looked at you the wrong way in the street.”

Quick Reactions, Fragile Bodies

June 8th, 2010

Note: This study or any variables involved can not be confirmed by CompLexity Gaming.

Dr Dominic Micklewright, from the University of Essex conducted numerous physical and psychological tests to see if playing computer games could be defined as a sport.

The tests came back that gamers had traits that are comparable to real athletes. They reacted to visual stimuli almost as fast as fighter jet pilots.  However, their fitness levels were very low and made them seem older than their actual ages.

Someone of this age should be much fitter, but perhaps this is the occupational hazard of the professional gamer who can spend around 10 hours a day in front of a screen. It is always difficult to say how these things will develop, but it could have long term health implications such as an increased risk of heart disease. Screen time with children has a very strong correlation with childhood obesity and risk factors with heart disease later in life. – Dr Micklewright, University of Essex

Dr. Micklewright was very surprised by how close these gamers compared to pro-athletes with reflexes, but shocked to discover the health results.

Area 51 Calls It Quits

June 3rd, 2010

Today, the Area 51 TF2 squad decided to call it in and quit this season of ESEA for good. After a very unsuccessful season of ESEA-I in the TF2 division, Area 51 held a record of 0-16. The players have left the roster and have decided to change the team name from Area 51 to “0-16” on their ESEA TF2 page, which can be found here.

In addition, the team has also opt-out of this season of CEVO as well, stating “were done with everything”. In a short interview on eseanews.com, Area 51’s leader and medic Len “CB” Talarico answered a few questions regarding the current status of the team and if they have future plans of returning to the competitive scene.

Hey, just a couple quick questions about the detag – you guys done for CEVO too? Or do you plan to finish out the season?

No, were done with everything.

Done for future seasons, too then? No reforming next season?

No our team is officially done for good.

Any plans to stay in TF2? For your or any of the guys?

I hope to be able to play next season, just depends on what happens in the off-season I guess. I’m not sure of any of the other guys plans.

Sorry for the dumb, obvious question but – any particular reason for the breakup?

When u lose 14 straight the game obviously isn’t going to be fun anymore – but more than that I wasn’t really happy from the beginning of the season when we lost cbear and stam. Things just never fell into place like they had the season before, and I just decided it was best to call it quits.
