EA Sports to Lock-out Multiplayer

May 11th, 2010

EA Sports is going after the used game market with a one-time only sale code that will come with all their games. Starting with the upcoming release of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 for XBOX360 and Playstation3, the publisher will introduce a new ‘Online Pass’ – which is a one-time registration code, included with each brand new copy of their game. This code allows players to access the publisher’s online services and features, up to and including bonus content.

Those who decide to wait out the big name games to buy used can buy an Online Pass for an additional $10 directly from EA. This pass will be implemented for the upcoming NCAA Football, NHL, Madden NFL, NBA and FIFA 11 titles for 2010. The pass will offer different features for each title, however those who buy it used will not have access to basic multiplayer features.

You will be unable to play multiplayer online game modes or use your downloaded content in online game modes.

Online leagues, dynasty and franchise modes are also only available with the Online Pass. The break down for each title can be seen on the publisher’s official website.

“This is an important inflection point in our business because it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhance premium online services to the entire robust EA SPORTS online community,” said Peter Moore, President of EA SPORTS.

Despite being the leader in used game sales, retailer GameStop, which acknowledged that it plans to focus on digital content in the future, supports Electronic Arts’ new direction.

“GameStop is excited to partner with such a forward-thinking publisher as Electronic Arts,” said Dan DeMatteo, Chief Executive Officer of GameStop Corp. “This relationship allows us to capitalize on our investments to market and sell downloadable content online, as well as through our network of stores worldwide.”

How will this effect your wallet, or other publishers? More money for used EA Games. The question remains whether or not other publishers will follow suite with a ‘one-time’ activation code.

MLG CEO Resigns, DiGiovanni Steps Up

May 11th, 2010

Yesterday, Matthew Bromberg of Major League Gaming, has resigned from the position of Chief Executive Officer due to opinion differences on how the company should grow. Bromberg, who ran MLG for four years, will be replaced by Chief Brand Officer Sundance DiGiovanni, who is currently MLG’s co-founder and interim CEO.

Bromberg says:

We have had an extraordinary run of growth and success over the last four years. There was a feeling among the founders that it was time to scale back our ambitions and grow more slowly. That isn’t in my nature, and was not my plan. We all agreed it was best to find a new CEO to execute this strategy

Sundance DiGiovanni’s goal as CEO is to focus on profitable growth on a consistent basis and to grow the company at a slower pace. It may also be expected that MLG would focus on delivering quality tournaments for partners such as EA Sports, ESPN, Doritos and others.

We had a recent board meeting with divergent opinions about the focus for the company, We are not changing the plan. It’s just a change in the velocity at which we are attempting to travel

Major League Gaming is close to being consistently profitable says DiGiovanni. Although, DiGiovanni states that he is only appointed to CEO on a interim level, he may consider to be the permanent CEO of MLG if asked. Bromberg will be an advisor to Oak Investment Partners, which is MLG’s primary investor.

Major League Gaming has also updated their Executive Team page, confirming the recent leadership changes.

About Sundance DiGiovanni: Sundance co-founded MLG with Mike Sepso in 2002 so he could combine his lifelong passion for gaming and his deeply competitive nature. As chief marketing officer of Major League Gaming, Sundance focuses on the long-term roadmap of competitive video game play and the various distribution channels that are bringing this burgeoning sport to the masses.

Engineer Update Coming Soon

May 5th, 2010

Today the TF2 developers over at Teamfortress.com released a new blog. The blog updates fans on a recent TF2 update on the 119th update badge. The update released on the 29th of March, gave TF2 fans the ability to wear three different badges, depending on how long they have been playing Team Fortress 2 since its release on October 10th, 2007.

Today’s small update goes to all the beta testing personnel, prior to release. The” Primeval Warrior” badge will replace the badge of anyone who purchased TF2 prior to the official release date.

We initially chose to calculate which badge to give players based on the beta release of TF2, because that was the date that customers could first play TF2. This turns out to have been a mistake, largely because many players did the math and thought they were getting something other than what they ended up with. So to remove that confusion, this new update moves that date forward to the official retail release of TF2, the 10th October 2007, and reissues updated badges to anyone who would be affected by that date shift.

And, if you did not hear, the Engineer Update is coming soon! Check out the video here.
